It's dangerous out there!
« on: September 26, 2014, 08:11:00 AM »
Every year we read here and in other places about hunters falling from tree stands. Well, I had a different experience and fortunately I wasn't there when it happened.

I set up a nice tree stand over a bear bait on my property. It's a Lone Wolf Alpha Male and I used the climbing sticks. The stand was set in a hemlock and there were two nice maples next to the hemlock making for a nice set up. About 15 yards away was another maple that I really did not pay much heed to.

Now, my property is river bottom land and the ground is very wet. Trees fall all the time…sometimes they are uprooted in wind storms and other times they die and just fall down.

Last Monday I had to go in and clean up the bait site as the baiting season was done. When I got there this is what I found.

To see how close it came to the stand you can see the bow hanger and my bow rope on two of the branches that got sheared off.

From the stand you can see the tree that did the damage and how it broke.

We had no wind that weekend so I assume that it's time to fall had come. Fortunately I had my pruning saw with me so I cleaned up the fallen branches. Looks like some chain saw work is needed to make it safe to use that trail. From now on I will carefully check surrounding trees for their viability and hope that if this ever happens again I am not in the tree. If I had been I could have lost my bow or you could be reading an obituary.

As for the bear, I hunted a different stand two afternoons ago hunting  for deer near some oaks. At 5 PM the bear walked right by me at about 6 yards on the right side of my stand where I couldn't shoot. He stayed in all the shooting lanes that I didn't cut and I watched him eating acorns for probably 45 minutes. He was, however, out of range most of the time. I hunted a different stand last night hoping I had his trail figured out. That didn't work so I'll be back near the oaks hoping he shows up. I have until Sunday to kill him. I think we all know what will happen on Monday….an easy kill shot that I can't take.

Sometimes the kill isn't what makes the hunt memorable. It's close encounters of many different kinds we will remember. This year, so far, has been memorable although there is still no new meat in the freezer. Hope you all have good luck, stay safe and shoot straight.

Oh, one last thought, the shooting lane you wonder if you should clear out, just do it!

Would have been an eye opener if you were sitting in the stand.   :scared:        :scared:

Yep, you never know.  Elk Camp 2010, middle of a sunny day, no wind..........CRASH right behind camp.  Lucky there was no one in the shower at the time as I am sure it would have seriously hurt them or even killed them.

I was hunting in a strong wind once and a tree nearby crashed. Amazing how loud it was.
Good luck with the bear.

Got caught back in a few miles when a wind storm came up quickly. I continued to stalk a small herd of elk...until dead trees started falling! All the way out I was looking up and listening for deadfalls. When setting up a tent/camp it's very important to inspect at surrounding trees. Looks like the one that came through the shower was dead without any bark. They can come down at anytime.

The widespread beetle kill makes this a real possibility out here.

A few years ago I was about to shoot a doe in heavy woods, and a big tree crashed down about 100 yards away, I saw it fall, and expected the doe to bolt. She hardly moved or cared, I settled myself down, and got her!

Monday morning, just after getting into my stand, I heard a crashing sound. Looked straight away from me, about 100 yards out and witnessed a huge tree either brake off, or a big widow maker come down. The neighbors are clear cutting, so I figure they left one hanging. Scary thought, being on the receiving end of something like that.

Wow, that'll get you thinking!

Way back in the early 80's I put up a stand in a very large, old tree on the edge of a marsh. It was a permanent stand because the tree was way too large for any other.

I was so anticipating opening morning because I knew what kind of deer moved through this large, button bush marsh (wet soil not standing water). I was expecting deer to leave the cornfields, walk through the 200 yards of woods, by this tree and into the swamp.

About an hour before light I was looking for that tree. I couldn't find it. I got sweaty, frustrated, and very confused. So, I just sat down and waited for light.  Yep, the giant tree had fallen over.

A few years back, I set up a pop-up blind for my wife on the edge of a food plot.  I confess I didn't examine the surrounding trees like I should have.  I moved over a ridge or two and got up in a climber stand.  Middle of the afternoon, I heard a loud crack and crash from the direction of my wife's stand, but didn't really attach any big significance to it.  When I went to escort her out after dark, she pointedly showed me how a large, dead tree, about 2 feet from her stand had fallen.  Just a few degrees different, and it would have landed on her blind.  Scared the heck out of me, and made me so thankful she hadn't been hurt.  Lesson learned, I'm much more careful now.
