Sometimes I wonder

Well, the season has been awful so far. I got sick the first day and lost so much weight in the first two weeks I couldn't pull my bow back! Any how I managed to get in my first morning hunt even though I wasn't well yet but the fact I was in the woods made me feel better.
So, at 8:30 I see a big doe coming in all by herself. She comes in and as she is going through an opening at 17 steps I manage to get my 72# Bear T.D. to full draw and made a perfect 10 ring shot! She slammed into a tree then bee-lined it out of sight.
I walked a 1/2 mile to my son's stand and then together we picked up a trail that we all dream about. As we stood straight up and just walked with blood splattered all over we were amazed she made the creek bed 300 yds from my stand. We were even more amazed that she went straight up the 30 ft. high bank and awe struck that she went between two houses and out across a dirt road!
We crossed the road with perfect blood everywhere, Since my shot had went straight through the trail was amazing. Even though we had waited more than 1/2 hr. to follow her she hadn't laid down once. We just kept walking and finally, according to Google Earth we found her 1850 yds. from where I shot her! The arrow went exactly where I wanted and she had bled nearly white inside. After 60+ big game kills with my sticks I have NEVER had that good of a blood trail that ever made it beyond 200 yds. These critters are amazing animals and every now & then you get a runner I guess.

That doesn't sound like an awful season to me!! Glad you're well enough to shoot though - I like to think of myself as a strapping young guy and I struggle to draw 70# :D
It's amazing how far these whitetails can go on one last breathe, or one last pump of the heart. All you can do is cross your fingers and hope it's not very far.

This will certainly be hunt to remember! It gives a good lesson, too. Don't give up on the tracking no matter how long it is. Good job.

Did you photograph the shot placement after recovery?

Here's how I see it. You have recovered both your health and your deer. Things are pretty good!!!! Congrats on the doe.

Deer constantly amaze me in their stamina. Congrats on getting out, and making it successful right off the bat!

So. . where was that hit ? That is over a mile and to run that, even for a deer took minutes at full tilt. I am guessing heart and lungs were not impacted. Great trail job. Congrat's on the deer.

For some reason, every deer I've heart shot, with a gun or bow, has run a good long ways and at top speed. Not sure why, but others have had the same experience. One I shot that way with a bow left a trail that would have looked good in a Friday the 13th movie; didn't seem possible that something could bleed like that and still keep running, but he did. He went well over 200 yards and was running uphill when he keeled over, apparently in full stride. Go figure.

Upon examination the shot went in the liver and angled out through the opposite lung on the other side.
