No Wings, watch stand rotation.
« on: October 01, 2007, 09:29:00 AM »
Just thought I would throw this in as someone can learn from it.. Sat am after hunt I decided to move a ladder stand about 20yds...so I climb down deposit gear away from area, climb back up and put safety rope around tree and stand to keep t up against tree with my big butt on it,I  then undo the stap, when to my dismay the stand decides to rotate to the left in the same direction as the slope of a steep drop at the ladders base..Time to pull out the wings.. oh yeahleft those at home ,, so I push off and up to get away from the stand and freefall about 14 feet and land parachute roll style right at the edge of the four foot drop...Sprained ankle only... point is even with a safety rope it is dangerous.. I had somehow torqued the stand when I climbed up in it the week before, the left rung was floating and the right rung stable causing the stand to roll even with the midpoint stap attached it was serioulsy like a propeller..Be aware...

I always add supplemental tie downs when I secure the stand because I had the same thing happen many, many years ago. Luckily, there were two young hickory trees next to the tree. I grabbed one in each hand and they set me down like you'd set your baby down on the floor. Had an angel watching  that day!

Never have put a ladder up or down but always thought that was a possibility when looking at them. Be careful out there!
