Show me your centaur's
« on: December 10, 2014, 05:53:00 PM »
I'm getting ready to order a centaur triple carbon. I would like to see pictures of your bows. Any suggestions on bow lengths would be appreciated. I was thinking about getting a 58" or 60" bow for my short 27" draw length.

Thanks
Jeff

Here's a 62" Triple Carbon I had Jim build me last year.  Awesome awesome bow that I shouldn't have let go.  Luckily a fellow TGer currently owns it.  It is feather light.  I tried a Dark Matter about 5 months later and I can say that is what I prefer given a choice.  It's worth the $200 up charge on a 1pc bow and it gives the bow an awesome extra heft.  I like this since I hate bow quivers.  He can do wood scales over the Dark Matter as well to dress it up.  I highly recommend his snakeskin also, done so perfectly they appear painted on.

The Triple Carbon is among the very best shooting hybrid longbows available in this age IMHO.  Fast, forgiving, and quiet.  Not to detract from his other models though, I'm also a big fan of the 'regular' glass model..only a handful of fps less but has a softer shot feel:  very pleasant bow.

Bocote riser, prairie rattler skins, thumbrest, small stippling and raven carving:

As for length...to get the maximum performance out of the bow you would want to go with the shortest for your draw...so a 56" or 58".  If you want some extra heft and stability from length, you could do 58,60, or even 62.  IMHO on a 27" draw I wouldn't go longer than 60" on these so you work the limbs enough.

I have 2 Centaur that I bought used and are my Favorited bows.  This one is the prettiest 51# @ 28" 60".  Bocote riser with curly maple limbs and one lam of carbon.  I pull close to 29" and never thought I would like a 60" bow but no problems.  The other is a 60" 55# @ 28" and is a double carbon and my go to bow this fall.

The finish that Jim uses is unbelievably tough.  I had him refinish a pronghorn and install some copperhead skins I sent him and he did one super job.  I have hit things with these bows that would have put a big scratch in any other finish.  Not a mark.

I LOVE that one so much Seth.  If lefty I would be requesting first dibs or a write-in in the will.  LOL!!  My next Dark Matter will be something similar.

That's a dandy Seth. Heres mine. A bit SHORT but still a killer blind bow..rat'

a 62" that I had, that just had a bit much weight. Nice mass weight, fast bow though.

Another 62"er I had. Again..to heavy for me,and nice mass. Killed my 1st deer with this bow.

Another 62"er I had. DAMN!! this one was almost perfect. It was SO light in hand. I wish so bad I would have had Dark Matter in it. I screwed that one up.

This is my current 60" Centaur. I hunt Turkey with it every spring and love it for that. Jim Neaves is a world class bowyer. He builds a world class bow. Jim if your reading this...GO TO A 64" OPTION FOR US HARD-HEADED LONG LONGBOW LOVERS!! You can do it Jim!!       rat'

Absolutely beautiful stuff, Jim is gonna start mine sometime after the first of the year, still so undecided, as of now I'm leaning toward the all black dark matter takedown. Hve thought about getting it stippled, but I'm concerned with it tearing my hands up with as much as I shoot, any feed back on that?
All we have to decide is what to do with the time given to us.

The take down works great! It's 2 Allen head bolts and a series of SS pins. Very tight.

Get the small stipple, No problems. I have 2 DM T/D's, both have thumbrest and small stipple. One has deer and turkey track engraving and the other has grizzly track. One has prarie rattler skins, the other canebrake skins. Wish I had some pics.

Thanks for the offer Guss, but I'm already on the list. I talked to Jim this evening and he told me about the scales for the dark matter riser. I not really sure what he is referring to. Can anyone explain or show me with pic's. Those are some nice looking bows. Cant wait.

Thanks
Jeff.

Jeff,
If you look at the pics I posted on page one, that is a Dark Matter with bacote scales. The scales are like a veneer over the DM.

Hey nineworlds9, My buddy Nightstalker and I were talking about the snake skins earlier today. I really like the way it looks. I was thanking the same thing about the bow length. I figured I would get more out of the limbs with the 58", but I'm fairly new to traditional archery and needed some input.

Thanks
Jeff
