old longbow come to life, maybe
« on: January 23, 2007, 09:22:00 AM »
I need some ideas on how to get an old solid fiberglass longbow up and running. This is a nostalgic project as the bow belonged to my uncle who introduced me to hunting. The bow is about 59" long and straight. It was made in the late 50s and supposed to draw about 60#s. The arrow rest is your hand. The problem is one of original glue on tips broke and is missing. I figured to notch the ends of the bow to attach the string but wondered if there is some other elegant solution.

I put hunderds of arrows though this bow many years ago and it shot quite well. So many quart sized wax cardboard milk containers and pears were the targets of my early days. When the 43#, 58" hoyt Pro Hunter recurve cam along the long bow was put aside. Still use the quiver made from the hide of the only deer the longbow ever claimed.

Markings include:
'genuine active fibre glass'
'custom built'......even then they knew
'ply-flex sportsmen accessories inc. nyc'

Thanks
Crow

Pictures would help here. Please don't start filing string grooves until we can see what the remaining tip looks like and what the damaged tip looks like.

If it had a glued-on tip of some sort, seems it would be getter to make a new tip and epoxy it on.

But, lets see the bow.

tip appears top be fiberglass....I could make a mold and cast one but not sure of what material to use...hard to believe such a tip lasted as long as it has.
Thanks!

Fiberglass bow is solid. Single fiberglass leaf springs have been used to replace multi leaf rear car springs.
It's those tips that worry me, but they held up for a long time before trauma befell one tip.

Crow,
If It was me, I'd make some new tips and eproxy them on. I have two of the old solid fiberglass bow's. They shoot just as good as they did years ago. If there is no cracks in the fiberglass, the limbs should be as strong as they ever were.
Good luck on your project.
ps. I still shoot the two I've got from time to time.

Get yourself some cow horn from a selfbow supplier or local farmer and make one out of the tip.  That bow will outlast all of us here....shoot it and enjoy.
