I shot my elk opening weekend. We had several cows coming past us but no shot. My son was actually less than 3 yards away from the cows but couldn't get a shot. They were being pushed by the bull I shot. When the bull was coming down by me he was trying to catch up to the cows thus I misread how fast he was moving and the shot was to his hind end. I was really upset at the shot . My son was so excited. We waited a while and I started to look for blood. I saw massive amounts of blood everywhere and heard a noise and looked up to see the elk was taking his last breath and had only gone less than 100 feet. When we went over to the bull I had noticed I had hit him in the area of the femoral artery. Well know all the work begins. 2 weeks later we were putting in a hard hunt to get my son his elk or deer. We were checking out a part of the mountain we hadn't been to yet this year. We were actually on our way back to camp when we busted some cows. I began to cow call to calm them down when we heard a cow call back to us. She walked right up to us and my son shot her. He was really upset when he thought it was this years calf but I explained it was last years calf. She went less then 50 yards and laid down under a pine tree. My buddy Jason and I dragged her down a trail for 5 minutes to the edge of private property. Jason went back to camp(15 minutes) to get the packs. While my son and I were butchering his elk we heard an atv coming across the private property. It was Jason and the owner . He had seen Jason walking with the packs and Jason had told him my son shot his elk. So they came up to help get the elk out. He helped us get the elk over the fence and onto the atv. He has seen us walk around his property since my son was 8 and was really excited for my son. He told my son it was going to cost him the heart and liver as was my fee to cross his property while packing out my elk. We were back to camp in less than 10 minutes and off to the butcher I went. All the other hunters came to our camp to congratulate my son. They couldn't believe we had both filled our tags with traditional gear and they couldn't fill theirs with compounds. My son was on cloud 9 but was back out first thing trying to fill his deer tag. My buddy Jason helped out on both hunts and pack outs but doesn't hunt. Lets just say he has plenty of backstrap and elk sausage in his freezer. Not to mention jerky when I make it.

Congrats! that is so nice to do your hunting with your son. My son started hunting elk seriously this fall and was in elk almost every time out...lots of stories. He finally got a nice elk during rifle season. He's out in Crested Butte. As he also guides, hopefully after my back surgery...maybe I can join in next year...tippit
