New Guy Intro
« on: December 29, 2014, 11:29:00 AM »
Hello everyone. My name is JD and I'm new to the site and to trad archery. I started out with a compound bow for deer hunting 6 years ago and caught the archery fever.  Last year I took a nice doe with my compound and although I was very appreciative, that satisfied feeling just wasn't there for me like it was before. I guess I wanted something more primal, a new challenge.

I picked up a 50# Bear Montana longbow and found a new passion. I can't believe how much more I enjoy shooting a bare bow vs compound. I found myself taking every opportunity I could to sneak out back and loose some arrows. Although I struck out with trad equipment this deer season, I loved every minute in the woods and look forward to connecting in the near future.

My passion rubbed off on my 12 year old daughter as well. We've been shooting together in the back yard since the summer. I picked up a PSE Silversnake for her. Since she really committed to archery and enjoys it so much, for Christmas we got her a Sammick Sage set up. She was over joyed.

Anyway, that's a little about me. Glad to have found this forum. Lurked for a day or so and was super impressed by the knowledge base here. I look forward to learning.

JD

Thanks Britt. Addiction is a good term. My wife has been throwing around "obsession" lol I like addiction as it sounds less creepy.    :bigsmyl:

Thanks KYTJ

I've heard that feral hogs have been increasing in numbers down in the bluegrass state. A buddy and I have talked about hitting the Boone Nat'l Forest in search of bacon.  Any advice on that front?

Thanks!

Welcome from Illinois! I am a compound convert as well.  There are many of us here. My Born Again date was in Jan of 2012.  Great Trad event coming at the End of January in Kalamazoo, MI. Be a it of a drive for coming from below Indy, but if want to see tons of great trad stuff, this is the show you should go to. Great Northern sponsors the event so you can check more details at their website gnbco.com and click the trad expo link. Lots of great bowyers will be there and you can shoot their bows.
Enjoy the ride!

Thanks for the info meat. I'm a sales rep and my territory is Minnesota, south to Missouri and everything east up to Maine. Maybe I can plan a trip to Michigan at the same time. I'll definitely look into it. Thanks so much.

Welcome.  I suggest checking out the two traditional archery events in Cloverdale,  IN in June and July.  Also the 3D shoots at Morgantown conservative club and Compton Rendezvous in MI every year.  Great places to learn more and some great, realistic shooting.  If you enjoy shooting in backyard you will love shooting a 3D course with your daughter.

Tim and guys at The Outdoorsman on 135 are a good reference for you also.

I am just a little south of you.  Also check out  www.indianabowhunterassociation.com.   I am on the board and we need more members like you.

Good Luck!

Oh man, I love the outdoorsman. In fact, I think it was Tim that tuned up my compound bow for me a couple years back. I live about 10 minutes from there.

I had no idea about the local shoots or resources. Thanks so much for the info. I am definitely interested in checking it out.

Being a noob with trad is very humbling.  I typically shoot into a rhinehart 18-1 and can hit the target 20 yards and in. Grouping isn't fantastic but I'm not missing. We've never done a 3-D shoot.  Are noob/beginner/intermediate trad shooters welcomed?

I'll check out the Indiana Bowhunters Association too. Sounds very interesting.

Welcome JD! Hope this new adventure scratches your "itch" for something more primal!
