Homemade Deer Lures input & suggestions,,,

I have using deer lures since I have been hunting. Some with great success and others not so much. My go to scent starting the third week of October is James Valley, Wall Hanger and Lethal Weapon but this year I am venturing out on my own and making my own homemade deer lure. I was raised up trapping muskrats and raccoons as a kid and made all my own raccoon bait but there is a huge difference from luring raccoons and luring deer but I am willing to give it a try. I have been toying with this idea since I went completely traditional several years ago. I already make my own cover scent with great success so why not give making my own deer lure? My father, as long as I can remember has used vanilla extract with a few drops of tonquin musk in early season with better then average success. But come third week of October he switches to James Valley. But my new home-bru is going to be a little bit more detailed then my fathers vanilla extract and few drops of tonquin musk. I am starting with deer glands, tarsals, metatarsals, interdigital glands soaking in 80 proof vodka for 2 months, then adding glycerine oil and letting soak for 2 more months, then add the just right amount of tonquin musk, (Siberian), and let soak until ready to use. I received the recipe and its proper portions from things that I researched on the internet as well as a old family friend. I am going to start using my home-bru in front of some my trail cameras in mid September to see what kind of response I get, if any before using it in a hunting situation. For me, it would give me great satisfaction in knowing I made my own deer lure with good success.
 I would like to know what you guys use, if anything, or if you have any input for me in regards to my attempt to making a deer lure. Any of your input or suggestion will be most welcomed.

The best home brew buck lure I have found is to take the tarsal glands from a fresh buck and place in a small jar filling it with glycerin. Let it sit until the next year and use it sparingly. Just a few drops at a time is all you need.

I'm anxious to see if it works myself. One thing that made sense to me was the fact that the deer on deer farms, where most lure manufactures get there urines, has a completely different diet then the deer that I hunt. Time should tell.

I have tried using scents with mixed success but none of it great. Vanilla and anise have been the most commonly used stuff.  But, as a cover scent, I used to use fresh garlic. I would rub in on my boots and would crush it on trees around my stand. I have had several deer nonchalantly follow that scent trail right under me. However, numerous people have suggested that garlic generally repels deer. Do you have any experience using it?  Also, is there any kind of list of household scents that attract deer? Keep us posted on your experiments.

I have had good success with cloudy ammonia straight in a small bottle . Just leave it open up wind of where you expect deer . I think it only works during the rut though .
I also think it works because the bucks get so anxious and ammonia is the strongest smell in a doe's pee .

Hey Sam, I wont know the ending results until next September. I have contacted some well known trappers and a old family friend who been a long time trapper who is helping me with everything. I am going to start testing my scent in front of my trail cameras. As for household goods, my father swears by using vanilla extract with a few drops of tonquin musk in the early and late season, mainly as a curiosity scent. It attracts does & bucks and never seems to spook them.

(1) Hey Dale, one can make a synthetic deer urine buy filling a bucket half way with "urea" that you can normally buy from a farm supply store or website.
(2) Then fill bucket within a inch of the top of water.
(3) Slowly stir for several minutes to mix the two ingredients. Let sit for no less then 24hrs.
(4) Put a funnel over a gallon milk jug.
(5) Use a one cup sized ladle to scoop liquid off the top of the bucket and pour into the gallon milk jug. Make sure that you don't ladle out any solid pieces of the urea when doing this. Eight ladles will equal a gallon.
(6) Add a 1/4 cup of ammonia to the jug. Put the lid on tight and shake for several minutes.
(7) (Optional) Per 16 ounces or synthetic urine. Add 1oz. doe tarsal tincture. You can add estrogen pills to make doe-in-heat. Add 1/8 ounce metatarsal tincture. Then you can add 3-4 drops of doe interdigital gland, no more then 4 drops.
(8) Or add 1oz. of buck tarsal gland tincture for buck urine. Then add 1/8 ounce of metatarsal tincture. Add 3-4 drops of buck interdigital gland.
 Make sure all glands come from the same deer to have a better reaction from the deer. The tonquin musk is added when making your tincture. When making my gland tincture I make sure to make the glands are kept separate, tarsal in one mason jar, metatarsal in a separate mason jar, interdigital glands in a another jar. But all marked what deer they come from.

I'll be watching this thread for sure! With that said I don't think you can make anything more than a "curiosity" scent for whitetails!

I first bought all in with Smokeys pre orbital deer scent on a rope trick! However It became over priced and I soon found "other" scents that worked just as good or better for getting pics! With that said I don't think you can come up  with a pheromone smell that will only last 3 days that will bring bucks running upon opening the bottle. If you do you will become a instant millionaire!  With that said when bucks are "right" you can get them to come check a lot of scents. Even if not right you can produce a scent that will arouse their curiosity and come check it out. Even for trail cam pics year around. Already done that that and it's NOT SMOKEYS!

Hey Larry, Thanks for the feed back. I have no interest in making money. I just feel it would be a great satisfaction for me to use something I actually made and was successful with.
 I have good success with cover scent which is nothing but sweet corn oil, acorn oil, black walnut oil and earth fragrance oil that I bought from a trapping website. Pending on where I'm hunting to what I use.
