who makes best wool now that sleeping indian is closed?
« on: January 02, 2015, 09:58:00 AM »
Been looking for some warm pants or bibs and have not had any luck in used market. Getting tougher to find SI stuff I guess. So who replaced them - GWW, day one, kom or ???  Thoughts???

A pair of lined pants from Gray Wolf Woolen would be my choice for warm wool.

I've got Gray Wolf, Sleeping indian, KOM, First Lite, Classic Bowman and Woolrich so I've run the gauntlet.  I use them all.

Silent Predator makes very good wool clothing. I have their jackets, vests and pants. I feel its priced right and very quality material.

I can second Silent Predator.  I bought there vest a few years ago and bought there bowhunter jacket last year.  I plan on picking up the pants this year at the Eastern Outdoor Show in Harrisburg in FEB.

size 38 waist is what i need.

i has the Day One a few years back and sold them cause i thought they were too stiff.  maybe i just needed to break them in but the SI pants i had were much softer and easier to move in. I absolutely love their fleece parkas/pants!!  Best design i have found.

i will check out silent predator - i did not see them.

Thanks

Check out the Columbia Gallatin wool. If you can find it. Comes in snow camo and brown camo. I have had my monarch pass jacket and pants for 5 years now and the stuff is just awesome. Got the pants on amazon for $60 and the Jacket locally for $89.

My prmary wool is SI but also have a little KOM left. My brother purchased Silent Predator this year and really likes it. I think it's well made and have been thinking about getting a set in the grey camo. He had a great experience with the company and they also made it to his size after he was meassured by his tailor just like SI used to. We can't buy off the rack so when we find a company willing to make/modify to meet our needs we stick with them. I would like to see them add SI's brown camo pattern however.

I had Silent Predator do some different things for me and they did a great job to accommodate. Wait times are generally short and they are customer focused. Can't say enough good things about Silent Predator.

I really like the Cabela's Outfitter's Wooltimate WindShear Pants. I have had mine for about 5 years and they have been a great pair of pants. they are also on sale for a great price online now.

can anyone confirm that any of these manufacturers' wool is a "soft" and "flexible" as sleeping indian?  Not sure what the diff is but mine pullover is sooooo thick but also soon soft and flexible.

Silent Predator is very soft. Keep in mind I own and wear SI so I know what you're talking about.

Soft wool usually means a little more open weave.  I have some Silent Predator, which is a lot like my KOM, what I would also call a fairly open weave. Both high quality, of course, and Silent Predator is a bit less expensive.

Gray Wolf woolens offers a somewhat tighter weave, which will block the wind better, IMO.  In my opinion, it's soft, and certainly quiet, and they'll sew to custom fit.  My next wool will be Gray Wolf.

I have some Day One pants. Well made and soft in my opinion, but not fitted that well for me. If you like baggy pants they deserve a look. Nice soft pockets too.

I think I have a lead on a pair of stand master bibs from KOM. Any comments on these?

I love my King of the Mountain but have heard nothing but great stuff about Asbell wool. I got my KOM second hand but it might be outside my price range new.
