My Wife says "Thanks for Darn Tough Socks, Tradgang"
« on: January 03, 2015, 11:56:00 AM »
Hi Everybody,
My wife told me that I had to post a "Thanks to Tradgang" on her behalf.

You see, I spend way too much time reading here.  Late this past summer, I found myself reading some postings about "socks".  Why?  My feet and hands are not the warmest parts of my body and if those parts get too cold, it can ruin your day.

Anyhow, over the course of a couple of threads I became interested in the Darn Tough Socks.  Despite my interest, I just couldn't pull the trigger to buy myself any socks at that price.

However, I have in the past bought my wife some merino wool socks and had her tell me "this is the best thing you've ever bought me".

I wasn't afraid to put that kind of money into Darn Tough Socks as a Christmas gift for her to "test the waters".

She works in a large warehouse business and the room she is stuck in is very cold (concrete floors w/out rugs or pads) and concrete external walls with high ceilings.  It's frigid in there.

Last night she said "Tell those folks on Tradgang I said thanks for the sock recommendation and we're going to the store this weekend to buy more."

I'm not sure that any of you are seriously interested in her endorsement but you've made me look good to her and we both say "thanks to tradgang" for the great socks.  Now I've got to figure out how to get some for me.

Warmest regards,
homebru

Been wearing them for 3 years now. I tossed all my cotton socks away about 5 years ago. The darn tough are holding up way better than other wool socks I tried.
I wear the mid calf cushion crew all year long, also wear them for hunting. Same thickness as a regular cotton sock so need to change footwear size.
Also bought some of their "no show" ankle socks for summer wear with shorts.

First time I have heard of them. I did some checking around and they seem awesome. American made and come with a lifetime warranty. A little pricey for a pair of socks...but I'm on my feet all day every day. I don't  cheap out when it comes to boots...I think I'm gonna order a couple pairs.

Just ordered 2 pairs to try em out. I opted for some light weight socks for warmer weather...if they are comfortable in the summertime when I'm logging they will be the worlds greatest socks.

This time of year I wear Peoples Socks. Also wool and extremely warm...priced very reasonable as well. They are too warm for my Muck boots...my feet sweat something awful with the Mucks and PS. I love them paired with my steel toe, leather, logger boots.

Like I said earlier.....I'm on my feet a ALL DAY LONG....in the nastiest conditions that Tennessee has to throw at me. I put anything on my feet through the ringer and them some.

Sock it to me.

I started buying DT socks a couple years ago after finding them in a backpacking shop in Asheville, NC. How good are they? Well...for Christmas this year our daughter and her husband both requested more DT socks after receiving them last year. My wife received 4 more pairs and now owns about 6 I believe. I think I own a dozen pair now. Warm, sturdy, well-made....they just show quality all the way. My 2 year old socks still look new.

I am "sold"....just ordered 4 pair that I found on sale.

They are still pricey but since they are lifetime guaranteed...... I guess I'll find out...lol

If I remember I'll come back and give my "take" on how they work for me.

I have a bunch of DT's both for hunting and just for kicking around.

a few notes I've learned.

DO NOT dry them!!!   That or my feet are getting fat LOL!  They may not shrink a bunch but it's enough to make them a little on the snug side.  YMMV here depending on how close they are to almost too tight to begin with.  I prefer to buy larger sizes!  which leads me into the 2nd thing.

Don't buy them too tight!  If they are snug, snug=cold feet!   Originally I bought a number of pairs and couldn't figure out why my feet would roast for awhile than freeze (sweating was the obvious ringer).   Later on I found my feet were just cold laying around the house.  One of those dryer incidences compared to a new pair showed me my issue.  My socks shrunk just enough to be just a tad to snug.  I caught it trying to match socks.

Thankfully I have someone to give them too and they love them as well!

My feet would sweat in them like the dickens so I had to stop wearing them at work...my feet were just to blasted warm!!!!   They work great in waders fishing, hiking etc.  If you have sweaty feet (I typically don't) you may find you have to spray your feet with a antiperspirant.

I have yet to wear one out!

Hmm I thought one of the reasons we buy those type socks was for good wicking properties.

Crooked Stic...

They do pick up the moisture from foot perspiration, and it is (like any wool) absorbed into the weave and fibers. If feet perspire heavily then any wool sock will get damp. For my hunting use I always have on a pair of thinner liner socks which do a good job of pulling the moisture from my skin and moving it toward the thicker (DT) socks I'm wearing. I took 3 pairs of the Mountaineering socks to Alaska and simply changed out at midday if my socks were damp (and they usually were) from perspiring inside my Lacrosse rubber boots.

I haven't noticed any problem with my socks shrinking, and I wear some form of DT socks every day now.

I should add that I'm wearing a pair of thin Merino SmartWool liners next to my feet when hunting. These are outstanding liners, and do not seem to retain much moisture. Being merino wool they help keep my feet smelling better on long hunts. They are not particularly soft and cozy; are more of a super-durable weave and they stay in place against the foot. Combined with heavier DT socks I haven't found a better system.

Lol Kevin my feet would rot with liners!   I've tried them a few times, man it just makes my feet sweat profusely.   Normally even in my work boots working a 12-14 hour shift my socks are almost dry, though not always with cotton.  The dt's are just too dog gone warm for indoors for me.   They were great when I was inside/outside and generally soaked most of the day before I took a job change here a few years back.  It was the one part on my body that didn't get cold with them on!

I sure wish I could KEEP them from shrinking, I have more than a few pairs now.  They don't shrink enough to go holy crap that's infant size ...like when ma likes washing my wool undies when I'm home on vacation, we still crack up over this one.  My little brother loves it! But they do shrink enough to be slightly snug which in turn creates cold feet!   ymmv, my guess is foot shape and the size sock you have.  The simple solution for me was to buy larger socks than I thought I needed.  They are imho also marked wrong....a 10 is not a 10 unless you have narrow feet than maybe they'll fit fine.   If I go with 10's my feet freeze inside a heated house brand new in the package!

I'll be picking up a few pairs of those mountineerings.  I have a pile of the hunting boot socks, tried the coolmax for work no joy, and 2 other pairs of dt's.

I do prefer them over the heavier socks for august hunts up here.  Smart wools mid august are too much usually.   I do the same swap out at some point throughout the day.

Don't get me wrong here they are absolutely great socks!  They just have some quirks to them, or at least with my fat feet they do  ;) .
