The recent squirrel hunting post has me wanting to cook one. I've killed a ton, but I've always given them away. I will be getting after them this evening. Hope to make the Highlight 2015 reel. Stay tuned

I'm in the same boat. Killed a bunch, have always given them away. That thread's making me want to get after some too. Once deer season's over that's my first to-do.

I was telling a buddy the other day I wish kids still went squirrel hunting. All my hunting spots are covered up in them. I will have 3-6 different ones scurrying around me on every deer hunting sit.
I am also thinking I'll get after them with something that will shoot farther than my bow.

I think a lot of people have forgotten just how fun it is to hunt squirrels.

Yes, I had a Britney growing up and he was a really good squirrel dog. He was pretty good on quail also and I don't think squirrel hunting with him, hurt at all.

Yep, soon as deer season closes I'm going squirrel and rabbit hunting.

Shot them when I was a young kid with trad gear. No one was around capable of showing me how to field dress or cook them.

Treat squirrels like any other game, get them gutted and cooled ASAP, keep 'em clean, soak 'em in salt water. I actually think greys are better tasting than the fox (red) squirrels, which can be VERY tough, to the point that greys are the only ones I'll hunt anymore.

My favorite recipe is sherried squirrel.
Back when my wife ate meat, she would beg me to bring them home over deer and haddock.

Yep, the first squirrels my wife ate had her saying and I quote, "you can bring me some more of these but leave the ducks be".

I use another method to tenderize squirrels which is similar to hanging meat to age. Just put the cleaned critters in zip lock bags in the refrigerator for 5-7 days before cooking.
