Superstitions, rituals or lucky items….
« on: October 03, 2007, 12:41:00 PM »
Just wondering what are some of the rituals, superstitions or even good luck items that you have to have or do when you go hunting?

I have a Donegal cap from Ireland that I call my lucky hat.
I begin everyday with prayer, and the first thing I do when I get in the stand is make a prayer of thanks.

I'm testing the mojo of an old (and by now, pretty dirty) blue t-shirt. I used that same shirt to take a successful 30-yard shot on a small cottontail rabbit and kill my first turkey. Gonna be wearing it under my camos this year...

I have an old Remington brand stocking cap that pretty much accompanies me on every sojourn to the woods.  Of course, I always carry my binocs.  Don't know if they're lucky, but I do consider them essential.

I'm testing the mojo theory this year.  After years of using my old timer knife to gut way too many deer to count, I switched to a gerber when I was a sales rep for them.  This was 10 years ago.  I've had a few opportunities at good bucks since the switch, but haven't sealed the deal.  I took out the old timer, and spent an hour or so massaging the blade to shaving sharp, and it will be with me this year.  I'll have to let you know....

I carry my grandpa's hunting knife.  Not really for luck or mojo, just a connection to my past.  I remember how he would sit up at night in our deer cabin putting an edge on that thing about a molecule wide.  I can't begin to get the thing as sharp as he could get it.

I shave the hair off my arms with my broadheads. I don't hunt unless my arms are bald.

That's funny!  My first bow season was in 1959  and I hunted with a guy who carried 4 or 5 gall stones from a deer in a little leather bag.  I didn't have one.... which is probably why it took me 11 years to put my first deer on the ground....

Im not a sucker for items, I dont put much stock in physical things even though I often carry Grand dads Olsen knife when I hunt.  I like to say a silent prayer of thanks and wish for only clean kills or clean misses, the only two shots worth anything in my book.
Hunt fair, hunt hard, no regrets.

I'm not superstitious at all, but when I was kid I remember reading about how some native americans used to put something(like feathers, piece of hide, etc..) from the game they took on there weapon of choice for hunting. I thought it was cool and did that for years. Still do sometimes. Now I don't believe that it brings me any sort of luck or anything, but I admire the gesture of respect and thanksgiving for the game that was taken.

I don't carry anything in particualar when I hunt.  My friends and I have a little ritual we conduct at the campfire the night before opening day.  I save all my broken arrows throughout the year.  The arrows are placed on the fire and we remember the hunting companions and mentors from our past as they burn.  My Grandpa whose hunter's soul I inherited is at the top of the list.  I never hunted with Grandpa but somehow I think I always do.

I used to carry one of my daughters baby teeth around my neck in a little deer skin pouch. After afew years the pouch got to smellin' worse than butt crack so I stopped.

Still have the little tooth, though. Maybe she (my daughter) will save me one of my granddaughters baby teeth.  I'll make a lucky necklace or something from them.

I like to spread around a big pile of corn & hunt very near to that. For luck.
