Question about wood grain
«

I am new to the bow building challenge.
I've been doing a lot of reading and am about ready to start my first.
I got some good looking hickory to start with, right rings and all.
My question is this: I was given some walnut, but the grain/rings don't run right. Can you still make a bow out of such wood if you put a hickory backing on it, or is it still of no value?

You can make a wonderful bow out of a not such nice of a piece of wood by backing with hickory. Walnut will make a fine belly to a hickory backed bow. Just make sure to keep the hickory thin enough. Good luck, Matt

Grain is very important in a potential board meant to be a bow. There's stuff on my site and other sites.. Check the How to section. Jawge
