For me, it will always bee the wood...both in veneer and in core.
It is a personal thing as I truly enjoy the look better and there is such a small speed advantage in carbon that it is not worth it. Besides, If I needed that extra 2-8 fps, I didn't shoot well enough to compete to begin with.
I have to admit that the woven carbon has it's appeal in certain situations, but nearly negates it's performance advantage. For every strand on the 90deg plain you gain torsion but nearly no strength with the added weight. In other words, the 0 deg fibers are doing all the work with no torsional gain and the 90's are doing all the torsional...thus twice the mass with half the cast.
