Check your arrows
« on: January 29, 2015, 11:50:00 PM »
The other day I was target shooting, and  I was less than happy with my shooting. I keep trying to isolate what was wrong with my shooting.  And ok, I admit I was getting frustrated .  I should have just put it away for the day.

On my second to last shot my arrow hit  the target but there was a "funny" click sound when it  hit. I thought ok just one more because I did not want to end on a marginal shot.

Not so funny when I released the POC arrow.  It literally blew up  before it was free of the string.

Fortunately I only got a scratch at the base of my bow hand, but I  am still finding pieces of that arrow on the ground.  I am sure I damaged the arrow on the second to last shot.

Could have been much worse.

Geeze! Glad to hear you didn't get hurt. Carbons freak me out a bit. Especially nocks on them.I change the nocks out if there's a scratch on them for fear of one breaking during the shot.
I'd rather be judged by 12 then carried by 6

Good point. I had the same post a few years ago when I had an arrow blow up while shooting with a bunch of guys. The point end of my arrow shot out at almost a 90 degree angle!!  It was a good thing every one was behind me!

Been there.  Had an arrow blow up when I releases, causing they bow to dry fire, the string to break, and me to crap my shorts.  I found half the string in the top of a grapefruit tree 20 ft up a year later.

My buddy wasn't so lucky. Here we are outside the hospital waiting for the surgeon to arrive to remove the arrow. All went well with his finger.

Arrows scare me a bit. I have seen too many photos like above, and my wife even had that happen ( in high school gym class).

I am fairly anal about checking them after most shots in the wild.  Not as much after target bales, but even there I flex them quite often.

I had the same thing happen at the Ski Sawmill shoot last year with a carbon. Must've cracked a few targets before and completely exploded upon release.

I escaped with just a giant bruise on my bicep from the arrow/string going wacky, and was lucky it wasn't ten times worse. I'll post up a picture in a few.

This was even a few days after the fact. I had a scratch mark from where the nock-end of the arrow skimmed the whole way down my bicep, just lucky I didn't have half an arrow sticking in me.

I tap arrows against my calf to check for any off-sounding noises. Most of the time my calf is OK.
