Wipe on poly , cap dip and glue
« on: February 11, 2015, 06:17:00 AM »
When using wipe on poly for arrows is it best to use oil base or water base? what paint is compatible with these for a cap and what glue to Fletch ( I don't like tape) Spray on cap or dip?

I use the water base. I love using it, easy application and easy clean. Seems to last. I usually put 4 coats on my arrows. I either use duco cement or a super glue like g5 g-lock or gorilla glue. I either spray or dip my caps. I Spray with Rust-Oleum. I dip with fletch lac, oil based paints, or an acrylic base paint. I tried a latex paint once and it pealed off. I might not have had the right primer which caused that issue.

I have not used your combination, but Duco would be the first glue I tried.

I assume you want to put the wipe on over the other stuff? I am having good luck using the water based Polycrilic over Fletch laq for protecting the cresting. I orginally bought a bottle of the Bohning brand to cover the cresting. When I realized it was water based I used the Min-wax Polycrilic. So far no issues with cracking or peeling. When July gets here I will know for sure as arrows get real hot in the sun here.
As for glue, I use the Saunders NPV glue but I found the Gorilla Super Gluewith the blue cap works also.

I'm using wipe on poly, silver can.  Slow dry Rustoleum rattle can for caps and duco for glue. I've had no issues with that combo.

It is best to stay with water-based lacquer and cresting lac. One should not use a combination of paint, or enamel with lacquer. Bohning paints are not the same as water based lacquers. Also, some manufacturer's call their enamel a lacquer.  When in doubt, put a drop in lacquer thinner to see if it disburses. When using two different products, you may find it bleeds thru, or won't dry. Duco cement works better on lacquer.  If you use stain, test it to see if the stain bleeds thru the lacquer. I have used a clear coat over a water based stain, to prevent it from bleeding thru the cap dip or cresting. Red dye is great for bleeding thru.
