I need ideas for new limb veneers, please.
« on: February 11, 2015, 05:14:00 PM »
I'm having Leon Stewart make me a new set of limbs for my 3 PC Slammer and would love some ideas on dark colored veneers. My old limbs had curly teak, which I liked a lot. I'm looking for some ideas on dark wood, which would blend in nicely with midwest hardwoods. I'd like the veneers to have a lot of figuring.

A couple of my ideas are Waterfall Bubinga and Carpathian Elm Burl.
What ideas do you think would work great? My riser is Cocobolo with tiger strip maple accents in the limb pockets, so I was thinking about belly side veneers of Tiger Stripe Maple, Birdseye Maple... The limb back veneers are in question, but I'm open to all ideas.

Thanks,
Dennis

I have a really pretty board of well figured Chechen wood.  Colors, figures, looks great.  I am keeping my board, but there are others out there.

My Blacktail VL has birds eye maple. It's not dark but I love it.

How 'bout the birdseye maple stained dark to match the riser? Hope you come up with something pretty.

Longbow'

If you liked the Curly Teak you will love the Carp' Elm as a dark veneer.  It has all kinda of crazy depth and figure, especially if you have it done gloss.  Search my Lil Slammer thread to see the awesome Carp' Elm he did on it.  For the belly I vote Birdseye maple stained to bring out the eyes.  To me Birdseye is better than tiger or curly which I find a little boring to be honest as its just stripes mostly.  Gonçalo Alves or Redwood Burl are some other pretty cool darker woods with some light mixed in and a more russet brown to red just as an alternative to the Carp' Elm.
