Native woods.......
« on: February 16, 2015, 05:21:00 PM »
I look and admire the bows posted here daily and some with the most exotic woods...... I'm curious how many folks have bows with woods native to the area they live in?  :)

I have a great northern ghost that the wood came from 25 miles from my house. Found this out from the bowyer that made it.

Waiting for Big Jim to give me the call.  Going to use MO native woods...sycamore, osage for the handle...can't decide on juniper or tulipwood for the limbs.

I like North American woods in my bows.  Osage and red elm, walnut and red elm, osage and eastern red cedar are a few I've built.  I have a GN Critter Gitter that is osage with hickory and my Whip TD has osage highlights with myrtle veneers.

Had BigJim build me a buffalo bow with some black walnut that came from my deer lease.I resawed a tree left laying on the ground by loggers and sent it to BigJim.

It's not mine and I don't have pics but saw a Widow that was made from Persimmon, locust and white oak. Great looking bow made from woods that are all food source trees in this area. Pretty cool!

In 1946 or 47, my father went to visit relatives in Newfield, NY where he cut down a walnut tree and had it cut into 3" planks and shipped to Florida to be used for gun stocks. He only cut about a dozen stock blanks from the walnut and another 4 or 5 from birdseye maple-the rest of the walnut was left to air dry in my grandfather's garage.  Chuck Deshler at Two Tracks Bows used some of that wood to make this Echo for me.  The whole story is here   http://tradgang.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=131973;p=1

I am air drying some mesquite that I hope can be made into a riser. I also have some Carob that is air drying also. Not native but a lot of different trees will grow here in SouthWest with enough water.
