Bare shaft tuning complete.....thoughts??
« on: February 18, 2015, 10:22:00 PM »
Finished bare shaft tuning this week and got my arrows ready to go. REALLY love the way this bow shoots....can't wait to start hunting with it.

I purchased this bow used and it came with 22 Gold Tip 5575 arrows that were 30.5 inches long.  I made it a goal to make use of those arrows so I spent a lot of time with Stu Miller's calculator and I spent a lot of time bare shaft tuning.  The previous owner of the bow was has a 29 inch draw length and around 200 grains up front...he also had 20 grain nock adapters installed.  I removed everything and started gradually cutting the arrows and adding weight to the front until I I finally arrived at what I hope is a great combination...or at least a great start.  For now I've only got 6 arrows complete and I'll shoot them for a few weeks and then decide how to proceed.

It's a Black Widow "Short Iron Wood". 56" tip to tip, 50 pounds at my 25 inch draw length. Arrows are Gold Tip 5575 Hunters cut to 27.5 inches weighing 557 grains with 310 of that up front. That's 11.1 grains per pound of draw weight and 26.1% front of center.

These arrows with that much weight up front fly like darts and have some serious momentum. Was shooting yesterday to finish up the bare shaft tuning with loose inserts and hit the target dead center at 20 yards. The arrow stopped halfway through the target but the insert kept going and came out the back of the target then bounced ten feet across the yard before coming to rest. That's an example of what a heavy tip arrow point can do...it literally DRAGS the arrow through the target.

Now to get myself ready for spring turkey and my late summer archery antelope hunt I'm going to shoot as much 3D with this bow as I possibly can to go along with my yard practice and some stump shooting.

sounds like a great combo.  So many good bows out there and it looks like you got one!
