My first attempt at arrow building!
« on: February 22, 2015, 12:29:00 PM »
Since I decided to buy a new bow this year I figured I would need some custom arrows to shoot out of it.I did some research and got some good idea's and gave it a go. I picked some cedar arrows spined 60-65# and 5 ½" shield cut feather fletchings. It was quite the process and took a lot of time but I'm very happy with how they turned out. Going to shoot them for the first time tomorrow. I hope they shoot as good as they look! I made a few mistakes along the way but this was my first try so I won't make those mistakes next time.I really like to tinker around with stuff and this was a fun project!

I have been very inspired by many of  the members of this site and I wanted to try and build some arrows that looked even close to as good as the ones I've seen posted on the board! Thanks again guys for all the help and kind words!

Well done goose. I just made my first dozen as well but they're not nearly as pretty as yours are. I just stained them and clear coated. No cresting but I absolutely love shooting woodies. I'm hooked and I'll bet you will be too after you give em a go.

Here's mine

Awesome looking arrows! I've always wanted to take my trad setup to the next level with wood arrows i've built. This is good inspiration!

Thank you guys. They took me about two weeks to finish. I have a whole new respect for the pro's out there that do this all the time! I'm already starting to think about the next set!

Good looking arrows. I might start making my own arrows at some point. Are there cresting conventions as far as marking the spine and arrow weight or is it either based simply on aesthetics or just individual rules?

I didn't have any of the stuff that I read about online to do the cresting so I used what I had in the workshop.

I used a stain to stain the shafts first.

Then I measured ten inches on each shaft and put a wrap of masking tape there.

Then I used a foam brush to put the red paint on.

Then I put the arrows on my arrow roller and hand painted the yellow and silver on over several days for each colour.

Finally I put three coats of clear sealer on and fletched the arrows.

It was a ton of work but I really enjoyed doing it.

The design on the shafts Harold are just what I came up with. I think the sky is the limit as too what someone could create if they wanted to. Give it a try,it was a fun project!
