What to do with left over leather.....
« on: February 27, 2015, 08:58:00 PM »
After building my first back quivers, I found myself with nice pieces of left-over leather that were too small to make another back quiver, but too big to just toss away.

The first thing I did was make a few small items:

These were fun to make, and useful, but I needed to make something bigger. Why not make possibles bags!.

At first, I was going to make one for myself, but my wife and I are going to Juneau in a couple of weeks, and we always bring some gifts for the grandkids, so I made these:

They are roughly 6x6, just right for them carry around small items. I still need to make one for our 13 year old grand daughter, but it will be of a different design. It will be a bit bigger with an interior pocket or two.

Of course, my wife and daughter now want one, and our 30 year old daughter in Juneau will want one, and so will the daugher-inlaw.... I still want one too, but now I'll have to buy maybe a double shoulder to have enough leather!

Mine will probably be made with a softer leather to be a bit quieter in the woods, It will be bigger to carry the stuff I'd normally put in my haversack. It may have a divider, and probably a couple of pockets. It should look good alongside my back quiver. I'll post a photo of what I come up with for a design (once I have one.)

Lots of good ideas there. And then, when you buy another double shoulder, you will have to really get started in earnest and then, before you know it, you'll be out of leather again. Tandy is going to love you   :)

I use left overs to make pocket quivers. Your work looks great! Thanks for sharing.

Akbowbender, are those limb tip protectors in that first pic on the top. If so how do you keep them from falling off the bottom limb?

I have some 3rivers leather tip protectors but they rattle because they are loose fitting I wrapped them with old bow string real tight to stop it but I would like to make my own.

What would be the best way to go about making my own? I have a Tandy leather catalog but other than making a few arrow rest and a few tabs I have know idea what I'm doing. Also, I have never stitched leather.

Very nice work as always Chuck!  You're sure to have a bunch of happy females in your family, and I like your idea for your own Haversack....looking forward to seeing pics of your progress on that.

Msbow - those are string keepers pictured above.

I need a new tip protector for my longbow. I've got some buckskin, but it's too light. I'll have to see if I can come up with something heavier to use.

Chuck leather work kind of gets to be an addiction, don't it brother. Your work looks real nice. I'll bet your grandkids will really enjoy those. Its a relaxing hobby for me. Here's   something you can also make with those smaller pieces.
