Info needed, Cracked glass at limb bolts?
« on: March 04, 2015, 09:25:00 AM »
Hi Guys
Looking for some advice on Nigels Schafer Silvertip.
There is a crack in the glass starting from both limb bolts one the back of the bow. Both limbs. About 6" long.
What can i do to keep it from running, is this something someone has encountered and fixed before?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks Andy

I am tempted to suggest runny crazy glue to infiltrate the crack, but on a bow of that price I would ask the bowyer

Good luck

Andy, those cracks come from over-tightening the limb bolts.  When tightening bolts, just need to be snug, not cranked down.  Loctite 420 or a super thin super glue will stop the crack from growing.  Bow should be fine, but would be best to send a pic to Dave for his opinion.  Best of luck.

Andy,
As mentioned above it is from over tightening the limb bolts. It may never become a problem.
I picked up a used set of Robertson limbs recently and they had the same problem. I chased (cleaned) the crack with a needle, and filled it with Loctite 420 good as new.

I recently got a used Jeffery takedown for a good price but somewhere along the way the original limb bolts had been lost and replaced with round Allen-head machine screws and nylon washers only slightly bigger than the screw head..the glass on both limbs was cracked alongside the washers from too much torque applied over too little area. I got proper limb bolts and spacers and super-glued the cracks.

I've adopted too many bows that needed a good home.

The limb bolt holes should be relieved so that the bolt does not hit the glass. Then fill with real thin super glue. You may even drill a very tiny hole at the end of the crack just through the glass to stop the running , fill that hole with super glue. I would suggest that you contact Dave about adding a thin overlay of matching wood to hide the crack after it is fixed.

Man I hate to say this but that doesn't look good. The fact that the Crack is as long as it is means is propagating and the only way you will stop it is to do what Steve said and stop drill it at the very end. Due to the length I'm not sure how feasible adding an overlay is going to be. If the end of the Crack is in the working part of the limb it's probable that the flexing would lift the overlay. Definitely get with Dave and see what he says.

I mentioned relieving the glass with a champer because the reason the crack is traveling is because when the bow is pulled there is just enough pressure being put on the glass by the bolt hitting the glass that it is causing the crack and causing the crack to travel. eliminate the pressure point and glue it and problem over.

God bless, Steve.

Moisture is the problem with the bolt threads wearing off the finish in the limb bolt holes . I have drilled tiny holes and used super glue and the cracks just keep getting longer . I have fixed a number of them by overlaying micarta or wood over the cracked area but if you have let it get past the fade out you may be out of luck. I have seen them go half way up the limb .The bolt holes should have a bushing installed before it cracks or overlays front and back.

My buddies Silvertip did the same thing a few years back.  Don't think he ever corrected it.  Still the sweetest bow I've ever shot.

I just sent Dave a riser and limbs to match a new riser I was getting, the limbs had a small line like yours maybe an inch.  Dave fixed it and I can't tell which limbs it was actually on. Call Schafer and ask how to do it.

I had palmer once with the same issue. It moved a little ways then never moved again. As far as I know those limbs are still being shot today.
