Any recommendations on checkering your riser?
« on: March 12, 2015, 11:55:00 AM »
I was wondering if any of you had recommendations for checkering your risers. I know Mr. Windauer comes highly recommended but was wondering if there are any others who may be able to do it with a quicker turn-around. And I'm specifically looking for checkering and not stippling. Thanks!

You are going to look long and hard to find someone better than Dave for the price...his work is amazing

I have checkering done by Dave on one of my bows. The work is amazing. Bob Morrison does great checkering too. A gun shop may be able to help with turnaround; but I suspect the lead time will be similar.

I always like the checkering on Dale Dye bows, but most likely a long wait to get it done.  Morrison and Schafer bows have two of the best.

Mr. Dye's is some of the best quality I have seen including on fancy rifles.
I checker for my own customers but do not do outside checkering work because of time limitations.
Daves work is also very good. Other than those I would probably look at local custom rifle builders and ask around . Some local checkers are very good and not well known outside of their local circle.

God bless, Steve

Daves turn around time is only a couple weeks if u set it up with Beth beforehand.  Tough to beat that.  Not sure what ur expecting.

Right, I checked with Beth and it'll be 3-4 weeks. I understand that the workmanship that Dave puts into his craft is second to none but I just was feeling... selfish? (not sure if that's the right word to express my emotion haha). But basically I just didn't want to be without my bow for too long and was wondering if there were others who might be able to do it quicker. Chalk it up to having only one bow  :)

3-4 weeks for a quality checkering job is really pretty good. A top notch craftsman usually has a backlog that reflects their work. Quality and quick usually do not go together when looking for skilled artists............ or plumbers,carpenters,bricklayers.............. and a cut rate price can get you a cut rate job.
Bowhunting is "KILL and EAT" not "Catch and Release".....Semper Fi!

No one is disputing that "you get what you pay for" and that Dave is a phenomenal bowyer and craftsman. I was simply looking for some people who may be under the radar and with a shorter turn-around; not being as well known or having a shorter backlog doesn't necessarily equate to having a shoddy work product.

Some folks may be tired of seeing this bow but sometimes a picture is worth 1000 words. Heres my Windauer checkered Silvertip.

Dave does some really nice wood carving also around the checkering if you want that extra something. But it can get pricey.
