No Duco Cement Locally????
« on: March 25, 2015, 11:36:00 AM »
Gang,

I used to be able to go to Family Dollar and buy Duco cement super cheap.  I dropped in yesterday and couldnt find it or the place where it is supposed to be hanging.  Did a little googling last night and it seems like maybe Family Dollar isnt going to be stocking it any longer.  So basically I am looking for other locations to purchase Duco.  I know, I know, I can order it online but it seems silly to order a 1 dollar tube of glue and pay 3 X that for shipping.

An alternate plan would be to change adhesives.  So I would be open to ideas for other types of glue that are readily available and what your experiences are with them.

Any help is appreciated

A lot of hardware stores carry duco.  Won't be a dollar a tube though.  I also use Fletch tite.  It's lacquer based, smells and probably kills a few brain cells, but has worked well for me.  Will run $5 a tube give or take a bit.

Our Walmarts quit carrying Duco several years ago. I could occasionally find it at Ace Hardware or OReilly Auto Parts but not anymore.

I buy it online now. You can find good deals on Amazon where it works out to about $2.50 a tube.

The Ace hardware here sells it for 5.95 a tube. Never saw it for a buck.

Wal Mart was a no go.  I had a tube of E6000 in my hand but left it there because it seemed like the dry time was long.  Probably just have to put my big boy pants on and order it.

I know the destructions say, apply to both surfaces and wait for two minutes. I put some on the feather, set it on the arrow, picked up, waited thirty seconds and put it back on the arrow as my first test. Thirty minutes later I took it off, tugged on the feather and it seemed stuck, so I did them all like that.
If you are going for real fast use after application and possibly have just one fletcher, fletch tape with a dab of Gorilla Super glue at the tip, mid point and rear of the feather along the bone to support it for rigidity is fast and solid.

I get two coupons out of paper every Sunday. One for Joann Fabric 30% off and one from Hobby Lobby 40% off. I then go there and buy Locktite Ultra Gel super glue.  That stuff works as good as anything I have ever used and I have been fletching arrows for about 50 years, give or take a year.

How is the shelf life on the Locktite after opening? They sell it at our local Bomgaars hardware store.

What sort of paint/shaft combos have you had success with.  I am using polycrilic and GT trad shafts wood with old fashioned poly

Pavan: Like most glues the Locktite starts to get thicker the older it gets but still can be used for nocks.  When I fletch, I do many arrows at one time so I use most of the glue up.

Caleb: If I  cap dip  I use all Bohning products
and if I use Onestringer wraps I use the Locktite glue.

I saw Ducco at a local Tru value hardware store. It was as expensive as the NPV glue I now use. Tried E6000, saw someone on another site was having good luck with it on woods. I had a hit and miss experience with it. It is now used to repair wife's broken stuff. Fletch tite on fletch Laq paints or vinyl wraps only. My go to stuff now is NPV glue by Saunders.

Last few times I checked Family Dollar they didn't have duco, it was like $1.25 a tube. My Ace Hardware has it for like $4 a tube. Next time I fletch some arrows I am going to try extra thick or jell super glue. I can be bought online (E**)in one or two oz. bottles for about $5 delivered.
