Very nice turtle shell call. How do you stabilize the shell and bone? How do you attach the slate?  I've heard some turtles are protected here in the US. Have you checked into that? I have a few turtle shells I collected from dead turtles and would like to try one of these.

I check what regs I could find. I found  nothing about collecting or using turtle shells. It might be a big deal if I wanted to make a business selling them or something but, just making a call from an old shell I doubt will raise the ire of the mdc. This is my first attempt at making a call of this kind so I just scrubbed the shell with peroxide to get it nice and white. Then rustolem primer and brown, testors paint for the spots, and a rustolem clear coat. The slate is held in place with Jb weld. I got a 10cc syringe from work filled it with epoxy and then ran a bead around the edge. The final step will be sanding the slate and making a striker.

I will once I put the final touches on it. I need to get the striker built still and sand the slate down.

Jakeemt,
Good job on the call! How thick is the slate and where did you get the slate?

MsBow that is a slate tile. I shaped it with a hammer and file. It's about 3/16 of an inch. I wanted 1/8th but had trouble finding slate of that thickness.

Sweet, I have a few shells laying around but I will have to check our regs and hopefully make one. Very nice.

I bet that thing has a nice pitch to it with that shell as a sounding chamber! Very cool! Bet you could do a glass call like that, as well.

Yes, you can make a glass one. I made one several years ago out of an old bottle I find while deer hunting that was the right size and thickness I was looking for. The last three turkeys I killed were all called in using a glass turtle shell call.
