Thread weight on field points
« on: April 20, 2015, 11:03:00 PM »
Hello everyone!

I am not sure if this is the place to be asking this, but here goes:

Can anyone tell me how much the threaded section of a field point weighs, i.e., from the BOP to the bottom of the thread?

I was thinking of possibly using it as added weight on the back of the insert for a carbon shaft...

Thanks to all!!!
Patrick.

I don't know the weight of the threaded end, but a little easier solution might be to just buy a piece of all-thread with the correct threads, then cut to length for whatever weight you want.

Thanks Bisch!

I should have explained myself a bit better.

I am in the middle of nowhere on a hunting trip and am looking into this as a last resort since I have no weights or all-threads and need to boost up the end weight since I just came by some hog trails...

Crazy request, I know....

A cut off length of the threaded section below the point would be fairly insignificant, less than 10 grains. It generally requires at least 20 grains to make much difference.  The problem with using longer sections is that there is less effect on spine the further inside the shaft the weight is added.

Just read your response to Bisch's post. Maybe what you should do is to get some weedwhacker line and cut it so it fills the entire hollow part of the shaft.

Don't have that either hahaha!! Just the field tips... I'm hoping someone could surprise me with close to 20 grains for a bit more penetration power....

Thank you all, next time I'll make sure to pack more stuff lol!

Yeah, just put the arrow in the right place, the weight of the threaded section wouldn't be noticeable

since I was still curious as to how much the thread section on the 145gr field tip weighed, as soon as I came out of the woods I grabbed my hack saw and cut an old fieldp. it weighed 22 gr and costs cheaper than weighted inserts or adapters... it doesn't screw in perfectly lined up but the deflection is irrelevant to bh alignment because it's relatively short and the arrow still spins true enough... I think lol

Cheers!

I was on hunting trip up to this morning and when I got back home I was able to weigh them. I just needed some advice while hunting since I had nothing then and didn't want to miss my chance. I have since cleared my doubts. Thanks to all who offered advice!

Just shoot it and quit worrying about it. If you couldn't do it with what you had, 20g aint going to make a difference.

Hiya. I'm pretty new to trad archery. I have a 40# Samick sage and currently using 1916 xx75 aluminium arrow. Got some screw in field tips to practice with but just wondering what field tips are most suitable for that type of arrow? Tks
