Arrow set up predator recurve... Help Please
« on: April 21, 2015, 07:35:00 PM »
Thank you to all those who helped me with my brace height but now a bigger issue I can't find the right arrow spine weight nothing I'm getting so frustrated.  The bbow is 51lbs @28inches. What is your knocking point and arrow set up. Any help would be so greatly appreciated

That happens to be my exact weight on my predator. I shoot split finger and my Nick point is just a hair under 1/2 inch. My arrows are gold tip traditional in 35/55 spine, cut to 28 1/4. Standard insert with 200 up front. I draw about 27 3/4. These fly like darts for me. I also have it braced at 71/2. This shoots good for me but I'm not stuck on that I will adjust up or down to get it hitting right where I'm looking. I like it around there because the bow is quiet there. I also have yarn wrapped around each end of the string and a set of wool puffs on it. Hope this helps.

My setup is almost the same as arrowbusters.  I have a 50 @ 28 Predator, draw to 28 1/2" brace @ 7.5" and nock point slightly above 1/2" with a D97 string with yarn puffs.  I'm shooting 35-55 with 100 grain insert and 100 grain point cut to 30 1/2" with 5" shield cuts and crown dipped and crested.   This setup currently works well for me but it must be borderline.  However shooting the same arrows that are not crown dipped or crested shows a little spine weak.  Just got some 55/75 that I want to try with 100 grain inserts and 150+ grain points.  If I get a chance to try them this weekend I'll let you know how they work.  Good Luck!

My old Shrew Clssic Hunter (51# @28") liked Carbon Express 150 with brass 50 or 100 grn inserts depending on broadhead weight. About 29" long.  I think my nock height was about 5/8".

Then I  called Ron LaClair from Shrew Bows and things got  easier. He suggested  62-64 # spine Sitka Spruce , (Paul  Jalon arrows) and they shot beautifully with 160 grn STOS.  No worries about what weight insert, etc. - it was just fun to go out and shoot them.  I am not recommending this for your bow necessarily, but more so that someone like Ron or Snag from  Widernesd Custom Arrows could help you a lot selecting the right spine.

Good luck and keep after it, it will come together.

Forgot to mention my arrow set up 35/55 cut to 30inches 50 gr insert and 125 grain head. Does this seem right?

What is your draw length?  With your arrows that long I suspect they may be weak.

I feel pretty confident that you are under spined. I would start at the length you have shooting bare shaft. Removing a 1/4 inch of arrow at a time. I would expect it to shoot straight at around 28.5 inches long with your 175 up front.

Instead of cutting on your arrows and risking having too short of arrow length, just build out on the strike plate of your bow to make your arrows act stiffer. Works like a charm if your arrows are indeed too weak. Guaranteed. You just have to get it the correct "cut" by using different thicknesses of material. I'll bet you can get it just right in just a few tries. That's how I use the same arrows with different bows.
