Ever hear "ghost"gobbles?
« on: April 24, 2015, 08:12:00 AM »
The past two days, I think I want to hear turkeys so bad that my brain is fooling me.  I continue to sit and call sporadically but the "gobbles" never get closer and usually come from all directions.

Hearing  things is not uncommon. I have taken it further, very large, many points, whitetail buck just over my shoulder. I swear to the almighty he was there, until I blinked.

Hey... sometimes those are really gobbles. Sometimes just barely within hearing distance, but gobbles nonetheless.

Those "ghost gobbles" have resulted in dead gobblers for me on several occasions.

(Not saying I also, sometimes hear things that aren't there.)    :readit:

No, but I'll never forget, years ago, what started off as the most productive morning I've ever had.  As soon as it got light enough to see, I counted seven different gobblers, gobbling off the roost. It was hilarious and went on for about 20 minutes. One would start and the rest followed down the ridge like the "wave" in a football stadium. Then a shotgun (likely at one of the still roosted birds) went off and the rest of them turned into "ghosts".  Never saw or heard another bird all morning.

Our area is echoing a pheasants crowing, distant gobbles and wind and tractors and robins. I tried to call in a jake to my deke jake, it took one look at a proud crowing cock pheasant and chased after it and was gone.  Even the turkeys are getting confused.

I took my son out for Wisconsin's opener the other weekend.  We were hunting with a friend from work, on his property.  While he was setting up a blind for the following morning I hit my box call.  Both my son and I heard a gobble.  Our eyes got big, our hearts started racing and we were scrambling for a place to set up.

I looked up wondering why my buddy wasn't hustling.  He was too busy laughing.  He had an app on his phone of turkey calls.  When I used my box call he pressed to "gobble" call.  His phone played the best "ghost gobbler" call we ever heard.

Ah, good times, good times.
