Bluegrass Birds
« on: May 12, 2015, 12:24:00 AM »
This season was really good to me. My window to bowhunt was short, but I made the most of it. The first hunt was awesome! A buddy brought along his compound and I had my trusty Silvertip. A mob of turkeys responded to my calling and soon we had five birds right behind the blind. I was able to make a great shot that resulted in a bird hitting the deck five yards from the dekes. The other birds charged in half strut and my buddy shoots a few tail feathers off. It was a great time with a few laughs about the miss.

The second hunt was a ton of fun. Every farm I hunt has shotgun pressure. This particular farm has about four people hunting besides me. This year they were all complaining about one particular gobbler. The gobbler would work into a wide open field and gobble his head off.  The shotgun hunters couldn't kill him. I made a plan based on what the other hunters told me and setup on him. After fly down time he went straight to his strutt zone. It was later in the season during this hunt and he only gobbled two times the whole morning. Two hens showed up and responded to some very soft calling. The gobbler couldn't take it and piled into the dekes strutting. The shot was true, but this is where things get crazy. The arrow hits him and he runs into a wire fence, bounces off and slams into my blind. The impact was so strong it collapses the wall of the blind. Two more flops and he was down for good.

Bow: Silvertip
Arrows: FMJ/VPA heads
Decoys: DSD This is my third year tagging out with archery gear in high pressure hunting areas. Best money I have ever spent for turkey hunting!!
Blind: DB  Dark Horse

Did you set up your blind in the middle of the field on the second bird?

Congrats on two great hunts, and a couple beautiful birds! Awesome!

Your second story had me picturing that bird hitting the blind, and the business end of your arrow puncturing it, and waving around in there with you while he flopped around.  :scared:

Thanks for sharing, and congrats again.

I ended up placing the blind along the field edge close to the roost. There was a large stump and old fence. What really did the trick was the two hens. When they walked into the decoys he came on a string from 80 yards.
