What headnet for bugs?
« on: May 13, 2015, 10:36:00 PM »
I'm thinking of getting a headnet this year for my bear hunt next month. Of course I'll be running my thermacell but I'm thinking a headnet would be s good back up or for extra protection. What do you guys reccomend?

Coglans makes a headset and it's not fancy but works fine.  I like the ones like this with a wore loop to keep the net off your face. Noseum netting is nice because it keeps the smallest bugs out its a bit harder to see through though.

Take a look at the Shannon Outdoors double layer net  leafy-flage jacket.  It has a headset built in to the hood that tucks back close enough to my face that it does not interfere with bowstring or tab for me.

Ever since I started using the Thermacell, I've had 0 problems with bugs while bear hunting.
I always carry a spare!! I just wear a Spandofalge head cover.

Check out the Bugshirt, I bought my wife and I one of these 3yrs ago and we use them all the time. I used my Bugshirt on my last bear hunt in Northern WI 2yrs ago and it worked great. The zipper on the face part I kept open until the bugs got really bad. I don't like using the bug dope or thermocell when bear hunting.

If you use a headnet take a black sharpie marker and color the area of the headnet that covers your eyes black. It will reduce the glare from the net and make it look like it isn't even there.

A light coat of flat black spray paint over the eye "area", takes the glare away.

Safety warning...DO NOT WEAR THE HEADNET WHEN SPRAYPAINTING IT!!!

The link I provided...that headnet has black mono so your vision is not impaired.

Before thermacells, I used to cut a small oval hole for my Left eye.  When I drew may bow the hole would come across to my Right eye giving me a clear view.  Any sun glare really obscures your vision.  You have to practice to get the hole in the correct place.  Another advantage during slow time is the entertainment of pinching the few black flies that want to crawl into the hole  :)

I gave up on head nets. Now I use a hood that I pull over my head. It has an open area around my eyes and nose, so I use a non DEET insect repellant in that area. I also spray a bit where my ears press tightly against the fabric. We have pretty healthy skeeters in Georgia, but this system not only works well, it has no issues of netting interfering with my shot or vision.

I don't use a Thermacell since mine blew up a few years ago. Scared the crap out of me!
