Thank You Izzy! ... I had luck with me this summer at the Long Island Trad Shoot. Someone was selling a 56", 50# @ 26" John McCullough~ Griffin. Had just enough $$$ to take it home. Paid the bridge toll on the way back with change from my ashtray.   ;)

I like this old quote by the Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, Inc. -

"As far as gear goes, you don't need any of that [stuff]. Nobody needs that stuff. If it makes people feel better to have a garage full of the very best gear available, great - I'll sell it to them. We're going to keep making the stuff, make it as good as we can, as functional as we can, but I don't have any illusions that it's very necessary. If you want real adventure, you have to leave all that at home and encourage the birds to [poop] on your head. That's when you start having adventure."

That was in an issue of Outside Magazine.  Gotta like that guy for his candidness.

Shawn does not look like a small guy. How does he fit all his clothes and gear into one Rubbermaid container? I have two just for coats and pants. Than there is the long zippered OD canvas bag o' boots and liners. Another duffle of long johns and socks. A bag of gloves, hats and mufflers and face masks and neck gaiters. Then there's the jeans and "regular" stuff I wear when I go into town to shower and do laundry. I take a dry box of bow stuff, one of muzzleloader stuff, and one for the rifle and handgun stuff.

And he packs his  gear  in there too?

The man needs more stuff.  "[dntthnk]"

Absolutely. But it doesn't stop anyone I know! I don't even hunt anymore, and I have a load of junk that would founder a pack mule. Guns, bows, knives, you name it. It's a disease, but it's not fatal.

Try gearing up for duck hunting in the morning/day then a bow hunt in the evening, not only packing for you but your son and sister!

I was reminded that bringing extra stuff isn't so bad.  We when pheasant hunting Saturday and got turned around in the fog.  I was amazed when the compass I brought along told me North was 90 degrees off of what I was thinking.  That and the water made what could of been a disaster less than 1/4 of a mile from the vehicle a minor inconvenience.

I believe in having at least a backup of essential things, even with a basic set of equipment and supplies that adds up to a lot of stuff.  Better to bring a lot of stuff than to wish you had.

I was someone who's backpack was filled, and still felt as if I didn't have enough stuff.  Then, after a day of hunting, I realized most of the items in the pack was not needed.

I then read an article by Mickey Lotz(Ferrett) about the minimalist approach, and it hit home.  My hunting is all done as a day trip, no more than an hour away from home, so this probably doesn't apply to those going away to camp.  Now, though, I just have a fanny pack with food, water, and some esentials.  Everything else goes in pockets.  It has really made it more enjoyable, and made me more mobile while ground hunting.

Maybe Mickey can chime in here, since he was my model as far as what is actually needed.
