Shot a black bear with this arrow. I heard the death moan then a minute later another death moan.  Heard it a total of 5 different times. So now I am thinking what the heck is going on.

Shot looked good the blood trail got heavier each yard I followed.  Met up with the more experienced bear hunters and he said lets wait until morning. Bear ended up only going about 70 yards.

When I got it back to camp and started skinning it found out I had hit 3 or 4 inches above the front knee and cut a artery in the leg. I never even entered the chest cavity. The long hair was deceiving as to where the body started.

I had the exact same thing happen once with a small whitetail buck. Cut the artery in the upper leg close to the body, and he went down within 75 yards.

I saw where the arrow hit, but the leg didn't appear to be broken. I stayed where I was for an hour, mentally kicking myself for making such a lousy shot, and hoping the wound would heal alright before checking on the outcome.

There were a few drops of blood where he landed after his first jump, but when I looked down the hill, there was blood all over the place, and I realized what had happened.

I was one happy hunter when I found him dead, just inside some golden rod.

I don't know what happened when I shot, but I'm sure it was my fault. I HATE wounding animals, and do everything I can to prevent it. I won't take an iffy shot, but even then things can go wrong.

I'm glad you got your bear.

Not that it means anything, but I shoot woodsman's too.

Bob

Turkey
3 blade Woodsman
Pass though, quartering to, in pocket under wing, cut wing feather on opposite side

Easy trail to follow,,

Last blood, never found another drop, or the turkey, even going back with my shorthair.
The season gave him perfect mornings, hunter's moons and fields of freedom found only by walking them with a predator's stride.

Thanks for posting that Maineac. No judgement about a non-recovery on this thread. Your information is helpful and the entire point of why I put up this thread in the first place!

Good hunting,
-Charlie

This was dropped by a 250# hog. 47# long bow with a 175 grain ABS Silver Flame. One hole and he went about 40 yards and was down.

An 80lb white tail doe with the same set up. 15 yard or so shot and blood like this for the last 75 yards of a 100 yard death run. This is her at the end.

Here's a blood trail from a doe I shot in Northern MI - Shot with a Silvertip recurve at about 25 yards - Grizzlystik with a Bear Razorhead with bleeder blade.

Heart hit - doe went less than 40 yards.  Best and shortest bloodtrail I've ever had.

Lots to be said for the old razorhead with bleeders.  A buddy of mine shot a buck at our place this past season pulling 70#s.  Entrance wound looked like it had been shot with a rifle!

This is a great thread, I wish I had something to contribute to it.

I guess I'd better start taking pictures of blood trails. Never even thought of it in the past. Thanks.

This doe was shot with a 475-500 grain wooden arrow with a Magnus 1 2 blade. BH clipped the elbow on the entrance, heart shot

Homey, all the bows that I get made are marked 53@26. The true poundage varies from 52-55lbs when I pull them on my scales. That bow is 54@26
