Removal of permanent marker
«
on:
June 09, 2015, 06:55:00 PM »
Recently acquired a longbow that had some magic marker used as a way to touch up a scratch. I would like to remove it! Is lacquer thinner going to damage the black fiberglass? Any other ways t o attack this? Thanks

Do not use lacquer thinner. Nasty stuff. I would consider something a little 'milder' (a relative term) first like rubbing alcohol, denatured alcohol, or at most naphtha or something like nail polish remover/acetone.

Probably won't hurt the fiberglass, but it won't do the finish any good, neither will naptha or acetone. Might want to post this question on the History forum. They deal with cleaning solvents and finishes all the time.

Write (copy) over it with an erasable marker, let sit a few seconds, wipe off. It works to get permanent marker off white boards...
Thanks,

I guess if we run into the bear that is making these tracks, we oughta just get off the trail.......He seems to like it!

rubbing alcohol works good, leave on longer before rubbing/wiping off and it loosens / breaks down better.

Try some Goof Off. Should work fine good stuff to have around the house. I've removed some paint pen paint off some carbon shafts. Acetone is a solvent for epoxy not good on your finish. I'd also try Tim Roberts suggestion. A damp rag with lacquer thinner will take it off for sure just don't drown the finish,

A little Hoppes #9 solvent or Kleenbore solvent (for firearms) on a Q-tip will remove it like nobody's business and will not hurt your finish. Try it, works wonders.
