It's Blasphemous ............................ Some Will Say
« on: October 09, 2007, 03:18:00 PM »
I know some, if not many on here will say it is blasphemous, but I recently purchased a DAS universal mount and a DAS B SRF sight.  Saturday I taped the mount to my ACS CX, installed the B SRF sight and started shooting.  Frankly, I really have no concern as to what others might think or say.  I'm concerned about me and my thoughts.

Actually, I initially didn't tape the mount on the bow because it didn't appear as though the bow's window was tall enough for the mount and sight to work.  I eventually decided to do it anyway.

After I taped it to the bow and started shooting, I was pleasantly surprised to find that its use resulted in great groups at 10 yards.  Then I started shooting it at 20 yards.  The groups were not quite as consistent or accurate at 20 yards.

Then Budro, the owner of the shop came over, stopped me, took his Black Feather longbow and showed me what I was doing and then illustrated what I should be doing.  After focusing more on my shots, the bow started shooting great groups at 20 yards with occasional fliers at 20 yards when I didn't maintain a rock solid bow arm.  After shooting awhile, I removed the tape, removed the backing from the adhesive on the mount and secured the mount to the bow.

I went to the shop yesterday and shot it again.  The bow was shooting great until I got tired and started losing focus.  I'm ready to take the bow to IL the end of the month.  I'll be setting up on trees at 15 yards from where I expect the deer to be.  The best beware the bight of the arrows coming out of my ACS CX!

P.S.  Good luck on your upcomming hunt.

In the late 50s and early 60s when I was a kid in WI, the dads of friends of mine who shot longbows were using hat pins stuck into a strip of cardboard taped to the belly of their osage bows.  Sounds pretty traditional to me.  I put a sight on a couple of my recurves periodically when I feel my form is in a slump (more often than I'd like) and it is pretty easy to define what I'm doing wrong.  Once I correct the mistakes to my satisfaction I take the sight off and usually find that my instinctive shooting has really been improved.

Most derogatory comments regarding sights, etc... are based in fun or ignorance.

I've heard some good things about that type of setup...I may try it at some point.

Nothing wrong with a sight as far as I can see, if it makes for a better chance at a killing shot/vs a possibly wounded critter at normal hunting distances, then by all means do it. You will catch crap from some but you sound like a guy who can take it  :)

Hey Wildman, Jim here.  I shot in Europe for two years and all those folks shot recurves and longbows using sites. Or, they were "string walkers" so they were at "point on" for every shot!  They shot very light poundage and were deadly accurate.  To bad they could not hunt with a bow over there.

I have seen a picture of Fred Bear shooting his longbow with a sight way back(1930's?).  Well before many other archery advancements came along that are now considered "traditional".  If you like it, that's all that matters.  I've got a couple old Bear bows with sights and enjoy shooting them like that.

A wooden match works wonders as well, just a piece of tape and the match and you have a very nice and accurate sight. Shawn

Hey Brian...does this mean your taking off that 5 Pin Fiber Optic Laser sight off your recurve?

Wow...I thought your setup was pretty neat!!!

Won't hear any screaming from me. Each person needs to decide what he/she wants to shoot.

I think Rusty shoots one of those. If you have any questions just email him.

Thanks folks!  I got a typical TradGang response.  And if you don't know what that is, then you are not a true TradGanger!    ;)    :D

Bill,

I have one of those mounted on a Horne Recurve hear at the house for new guys that come over and want to learn to shoot a bow.  It focuses the mind on a single area.  Isn't that what we are trying to do?

Good for you!!

Good for you Bill.  I shot SRF sights on a couple of my bows for several weeks. I found almost intstant increase in my consistency and accuracy, which I've maintained even after taking the sights off.

The SRF sight is great as a stand alone system, or as a training aid...

Bill,

How does that sight do if you cant the bow? I noticed on Masters of the Barebow that David Soza shoots with his bow pretty much vertical and the sight is kind of oval shaped (if that is the one you are using).

You won't hear any complaints from me about sights. I don't use them myself (though maybe I should), but they have been used for 70+ years, so I don't see how they are any less traditional than laminated bows or metal riser bows. I happen to like longbows and 50's style recurves without sights myself, but if the sight helps you make a clean harvest of a game animal, what's the problem?
