2015/2014 St Jude Hog Hunt !!!

First off I want to thank Mr.Terry Green for the generous donation of this hunt to last years auction. It took some time but we finally got our hectic schedules sorted out and made it happen. We drove down on Thursday and met up with Terry in town and headed to camp right before dark. Once we got camp sorted we checked out some maps and figured out the game plan for morning. More to follow.

Just remembered I have jury duty this week......post when I can....great trip.....especially for a property I've never been on....

Full of anticipation we were up before daylight. The time had come, with some breakfast in our bellies we set out.

 

After some scouting we split up and the wife and I found what we thought would be a promising spot.

We hunted various thickets  and patches of hardwoods for about 2 hours. While hunting a nice ditch we discovered signs that we weren't the only hunters on the property.

Shortly after we ran across those tracks we ran into a blowdown blocking the ditch. Just as we were climbing out of it I saw a flash of black in the brush in front of us. It was a nice old boar. As quick as he was there he was gone! Never even had a chance to draw on him. With the temperature getting hotter we hunted a little more then headed back to camp for lunch.

Yeah, and I tried to make a 4 wheel drive out of a 2 wheel drive....thought I was burried, but I was either going to get out or blow the motor....I got out.      

I was starting to get a little 'lay of the land' if you will, and eyeballing transition areas and trails and such.  We might just be able to pull this off after all I thought,....but it would take more work and a little different approach than normal for me.....

Once we got back to camp it was decided we'd make a quick run into town for a hot sandwich and some fuel. After waiting out the hottest part of the day it was time to get back out there. The wife and I split up this evening. She went to a set up by a feeder with some promising hog sign under it. I was headed back to where we hunted that morning. A little divide and conquer action. As told by the wife.... Terry took me to the feeder and we found a nice natural blind that had the wind in my favor. I settled in for what I hoped would be successful evening. A couple hours of later the feeder went off. Maybe that would bring the hogs in. As it grew darker in the woods I realized that the only game I was going to see was the squirrels and frogs. Hopefully the husband had better luck. Out I am to find Terry waiting for me. On the way back to camp Terry showed me the hog he got to "shoot". Now to wait on Mike.

The acomodations were better on the inside than looked on the outside...and AC worked like a charm and was a nice reward for the hunters in 90 plus temps with high humidity.....

Ok back to it! I made a slow stalk through the woods to the feeder that I wanted to sit under. After waiting until almost dark without any hogs showing I got up and hunted my way out. There were a number of nice spots a hog might have been in  so I checked each one on my way back to camp. I was walking down the road to the next "honey hole" when I heard something crackin in the brush. It was another bruiser of a hog. There was almost no shooting light left. I crept to the edge of the path and as soon as the hog cleared the weeds I let one fly! Swing and a miss. I had a feeling as soon as the arrow left the bow it wasn't going to happen. When I told Terry where I saw the hog he said he got to shoot it first! Then he showed me the pics on his phone. Tomorrow would hopefully bring more hogs and shot opportunities.
