3 D target rebuild help?
« on: June 30, 2015, 10:42:00 AM »
Looking for ways to rebuild the centers of some 3 D targets.

I know about the yellow foam stuff in a can from the box stores but heard that doesn't last long.

any ideas on how to fill in the holes on my targets would be appreciated.

There is a commercially made mixture that more closely matches the original material.  Can't remember the name of it now.  On the expensive side.  If you search the internet, can probably come up with it.

I used closed cell foam that came around a printer (packing material) and just cut and glue layers to the correct size.  It worked great.  I've used the spray foam before and it's a very short term fix.

Another option is to trim yoga blocks to fit the space, then use the spray foam to fill the gaps and "glue" in place.  That held up very well for me!

here is a quick and cheap way. Spray glue, burlap and expanding foam.  Glue the burlap over the area then fill it with foam.  It will last a few hundred arrows. then do it again. cost about $5.

I repaired one by putting a bunch of plastic shopping bags in the cavity and then covering with a burlap bag from the feed store.  After securing the burlap with nails on top, I spray painted the entire critter.  It works great and arrows are much easier to pull out.

I have used both the spray foam and the 3d country repair. The spray foam was crap on it's own. Wouldn't stop a heavy arrow at all. Might be fine on low lb bows.

the 3d country foam is more money, but actually better foam than the original target unless you have a Rinehart.

It just depends on what you are trying to achieve.

I would like to ask about the 3d archery paint was thinking of painting my Rinehart to help with UV wear I can notice 3 months out in the shade already. Wonder if I paint it every year I wouldn't have to cover it up when not in use?

Just repaired a 3D pig using Loctite Foam got at Lowe's for $8.    So far so good after 20 arrows through a 50Lb. Howard Hill Wesley Special, can't see the holes.   Dries white, cut off excess with sharp, stiff bladed knife, spray paint over foam areas.

The regular expando-foam isn't great to use. The medium expanding is denser and works better. Have to do it in layers though. I just use matte or satin rattle can paint.

I have repaired one with an expandable foam made for setting fence posts, I can't remember the name but I bought it at lowes in the concrete/masonry aisle

The loctite spray foam that says 4X as dense holds up pretty well, especially  when wrapped with shrink wrap plastic first.

I have great stuff patched 3d Targets that have been shooting for 30+ years. The key is not to shoot them to pieces before you give them another shot of foam, the other key is to have a bunch of them so your shots are spread out over the herd and not just one target.

I bought shot up targets that were auctioned off after the big tournaments, I paid $20 or less for most of them with a high of $40 for and antelope that was only shot on one side. I think I have 21 of them at this point.

Jon,
Last year I showed here or somewhere not sure of the " Sika" brand foam that is used to set posts and I tested it in a 5 gallon bucket and showed it on here or somewhere else not sure?
Any way Jon Cagle mentioned it as well a few posts up from mine but this stuff expands quickly and sets up quickly as well. If you have a few targets or friends have some that need repair just lay them flat on ground and use the mix as instructions explains and pour quickly and let it expand and dry, Then just take a hand saw or saws all whatever you have and shape it to animal when cured.
It costs around $9.00 to $11.00 and I got it at Home depot. I'll look for those pictures and post once I locate them so hang around here.

Now this is how Hot it got cause I went and touched that copper 12 gauge wire I put in the bucket to help pull out by making a coil on bottom so wire wouldn’t pull through when I tugged on it and it was “HOT” 🔥
so I checked it with a Temp probe and this is how hot it got ...

  Jon,
If you do try this "Sika" foam it does expand in about 3 minutes and will mushroom I'm sure but be quick with it and then when cured cut to shape of 3D critter you are repairing.
You may want to duct tape the bottom or other side where arrows blew through so foam doesn't run everywhere or tape cardboard tight to one side then lay it down in yard and just fill one side where it was shot up the most.
The bucket target I made didn't chip away and we will re use it every year until it's no good. I gave it to the friend that Host the stump shoot but I painted round circles in it and we bent the copper wire and looped a string around it so it would swing once hit the first time. Lots of fun to shoot at but if you make a bucket target it will look like a "wel trol " water expansion tank like mine and that was one full bag there. I did use dish soap to lube bucket well to help slide out and used a piece of flat steel to slide around inside to help loosen the foam from wall of bucket as I pulled on copper wire .
Make sure if you are shooting at a bucket target you leave plenty of room from other trees so you don't break your arrows as it swings around.

Many years ago (more years than I would like to admit), my brother and I bought up a bunch of used 3D targets from an archery shop that was replacing and upgrading their targets. We got 15 targets for about $200. They where in rough shape. We bought up some foam mix kits in Black and Tan...and went to work on them. We used the mix and pour foam to repair them for years, rather than buy inserts. These “worn out” targets lasted us close to 10 years of pretty regular use before we scrapped them.

3D targets can last a while if you keep repairing them...keep the sun off them (ours were set up in the woods), keep them out of the elements as much as you can (we up them up in the barn during Fall/winter)..and if faded, less than picture perfect targets are acceptable.
