Quietest footwear I've ever worn are the       L.L. Bean Maine Hunting Shoe .  It comes in a variety of heights. Just be sure you're looking at the Hunting Shoe, not the L.L. Bean Boot and the like.

Try 6-8 pair of wool blend socks electrical tape above your ankles to keep them in place. Too hot step in a creek. I know this seems crazy and looks goofy but it is very effective. Traction is quite good. Buy the cheaper socks in a tube style when the outer wears through rotate the hole to the top. With the 90+ weather we are having the woods is insanely dry.

Smooth bottom running shoes are good and the socks mentioned by58winters above are best-I have used both. How you walk is more important than what you are wearing by the way, with practice you can reduce the amount of sound by 50-75%.

I wear my snake boots exclusively these days. They have a fairly soft sole, which makes them a lot quieter than one might think. I agree with Bjorn that they way you walk plays a major part in how quietly you walk in the woods.

Best thing you should do this year is locate an elk wallow or a good waterhole to sit by. A treestand might be a good investment.

Elk make a lot of noise, so when elk hunting you can by with more noise.

In dry woods I am not skilled enough to moved in absolute silence even with bare feet! All those dry leaves just crunch no matter what I do. I have better success by trying to mimic natural sounds and time movement with wind.

I have mocs. Socks are better for traction and noise. The socks muffle the noise.

coolest stalking shoe is the converse canvas chuck Taylor sneaker,, no heat at all and just toss in they wash when needed,,, your feet will freeze if its chilly out though.

also I have a pair with carpet cut to the shape of the sole and "shoe goo'd" to the bottom for walking gravel trails and roads and not making a sound, aka cheapo bears feet.

All of the animals we hunt make noise when they are moving. Sit and listen to how they move and the sounds they make. We tend to walk at a steady pace and put our weigth on our heels which is way too noisy. Try walking on the balls of your feet nomatter what you have on your feet.

Nike combat boots are nice. The sole is close to a nike Free type.
