Snake Skins on the Montana.

Well I got the timber rattler skins on the Montana. In the process of adding a few more coats of tru oil. I have to say I'm really pleased with the turn out. I went a different route than originally planned though. The patterns in the two skins were close in color however one was noticeably larger. The Montana being so narrow would allow me to use the larger skin for both limbs giving me an exact color match. I've never seen the results of applying one this way. I thought what the heck.lol So I split the larger skin length ways and used it. The colors in the skin match the gray and black in the riser so close I could never have done it on purpose.lol I suppose the black glass on the back really darkened the lighter hues in the skin. I just hope they stay that way. I don't see any reason why they would fade or lighten over time.

I've split timber rattler skins to match up on a few bows. This works well for some skins but not others because of the pattern.

Not sure i can show pics. I've tried to post pics on here and cannot figure out why it's not working. Seems pretty straight forward they just aren't coming up. As soon as I get the last few coats on I'll get some pics maybe someone can assist me on getting them up. I have an iphone3 that I converted to straight talk and I have not got the mms or picture texting set up yet so I can't text pics or recieve them. I could e mail them through yahoo though. Some things just gotta be complicated!lol

Thanks guys. I'm really liking how they turned out! I applied them with tite bond lll. I didn't wrap them with medical wrap like I did on my other bow with copperhead skins and bout got into trouble. They dried to quick I'm thinking and the edges curled up and was trying to lift the edges. This was within the first twelve hours of drying. Made me nervous. One side was fine but I added more tight bond to the worse side and wrapped like I should have done in the first place. Anyway I let it dry 2 1/2 days then trimmed the edges and descaled. Then I double checked the edges for areas trying to raise or loosen up or pull away. Fixed these spots with regular super glue and let dry. Cleaned up the edges with fine sand paper and and blended the few super glue spots. Then wiped it all down with a damp rag. Applied tru oil allowing to dry at least 3 hrs between coats. I buffed with 0000 steel wool after the third and next to last coat. 8 coats total. After it hardens I'll hit it again with steel wool to dull the shine a little.

Very nice work.
I guess I'll not be satisfied until I skin my montana.
Once skinned, how difficult would it be to change out the grip?

That's very nice. Makes that Montana look like an expensive custom.
I had a Montana. They're very good bows, especially for the price of a used one.
