Looking for the right elk hunting partner - 2016 CO
« on: July 20, 2015, 11:05:00 AM »
I have a unique idea. I have discovered what can only be called world class elk hunting, in an OTC unit in CO. I hunted it last year    (you can read the full account here) --we had 9 mature bulls within 100 yards on the first day of hunting. The only problem is, it's too far back for me and my partner to get meat out. The route to hike in is about 12 miles, and to get horses in on the unmarked trail network is 14-16 miles.

I want to hunt in there again in 2016! But I can't responsibly do that without hiring a packer (which I can't afford). Unless...

Is there anybody out there with horses, who would want to team up with me and my partner? All I ask is that you be willing to pack out our bull(s), and in return I'll get you into my spot. I would hope that you would be willing to look me in the eye and give me your word you wouldn't tell anyone else about the area. I am not offering my services as a guide, but as a partner if desired. I would also hope that if you hunt there in future years, that you would be willing to notify me and pack out meat should I be able to make the trip.

Is that idea too crazy?

(Also, if it matters, I was shooting a compound on last year's hunt but will be toting the longbow in the future.)

Sounds reasonable to me, assuming the hunting was as good in the future.  Wish I had horses or Llamas or 8-10 porters like on a safari.

Not a crazy idea, BUT, the odds of finding a standup person is really slim.

If it were me, I would try and figure out another way, to go it alone.

Can you rent horses from a rancher in the area?

I just think in the end, if you thought you had found such a person, something, someway,it would go sour and your honey hole would be no more.

Those two Louisiana boys can be trusted and they don't quit!

12 miles is a heck of a haul!

I'm bumping this request/offer back up to the top because as I'm getting ready for this fall, I'm still holding out some slim hope of finding the right partner or 2 for this particular adventure. If you are seriously interested, please let me know.

Maybe you could rent those horses in the picture.   :)

Kidding aside, it might be tough finding a compatible partner.

Good eye! That pic is just for interest, it's not the place. But you're right, I know the odds are slim...

We have the horses and the know how, but currently have 3 hunters and two wives.

I can give you a contact to rent horses and tack for around $450 for the season

Micheal is on the right track, a couple pack animals really needed here.

Even if you have 4 guys in camp, there's a potential for 4 dead Elk, a situation not unlike you were already in.

"I can give you a contact to rent horses and tack for around $450 for the season."

Thats a no-brainer for me...

Is there anyway to hire an outfitter to drop you? I know some will drop your camp and haul out meat if someone shoots one so that you can continue hunting... then you wouldn't have the hassle and responsibilities and extra work that comes with horses.. Once you're there you can focus 100% on hunting....Just an idea..BeauJ

I've considered talking to the local outfitter, but my fear is that if he packs us out, then next year there will be a camp up there with new clients rolling through every week. I've looked into renting stock and haven't found an arrangement yet, but will certainly continue.

Have you thought about renting llamas? They can carry about 75 - 80lbs, are easy to take care of, and don't buck, kick, or stomp you:)Horses are great if you know what your doin'
