I drew a 323 mt goat tag!!!
« on: July 25, 2015, 11:27:00 AM »
I found out awhile back i drew a Mountain goat tag for unit 323 in Montana. Even though i grew up in Montana I've never spent time in this area. Was wondering if anyone has hunted this area before, and could give a jump start on were to start looking for goats come september.  It looks like I won't be able to do any scouting this summer, but I will be there for opening day and won't leave till I get my goat.....Hopefully i can get back in time to do a little elk hunting, but goat is the main focus this year.
Anyway looking for any advise on the area or goat hunting in general. I know someone that has hunted this area 2 years ago and will be in contact with him soon. Also going to call the biologist for the area. Just thought I'd ask on here just in case someone here has hunted it or has info. 5 WEEKS!!!!!! I have the bow all tuned up, and gear list started Can't wait!
(P.S. I'm not scared to get 10+ miles back in to get away from rifle hunters and into better hunting.)

I tried to get some photos of a goat near Mt. Cowen, I believe that is in 323. Bring your good legs and new boots, that is some rough stuff up there.

Myron...give me a call.   It's in my backyard, and I have some good info as well as map notations, and stuff I could share with you.

Mountain goats just speak to me of wild and untamed country. Enjoy the hunt of a lifetime, and we will be looking forward to hearing more and seeing pictures. Good Luck!!!

My buddy drew that tag last year and took a goat on the second day of the season with his bow.  I filmed it and put together a little movie for him.  He no longer shoots traditional so I didn't post the hunt on here.     Bow kills are definitely doable in that country.  PM me if you need any moral support.  Good luck!

Marc we packed in our Llamas on Aug 31 last year and woke up to 3-4 inches of snow....   I am not a believer in "let them get some hair".  The high country can be very unforgiving come Oct.

To me the mountain goat has always been the epitome of the traditional archery adventure.  Never drew a tag.  I am afraid that I am past my prime far enough that would put downing a goat past me. I can imagine that snow in the high stuff, at least where I was, could really get challenging. The ones I spotted a couple of years ago were really playing that 'where no man has gone before' (and not likely to get to in the near future) game.  I was pretty sure that I couldn't get to where they were, but just watching them in the distance really reminded me of just how magnificent their existence is.
