Insert Removal Help!

I came across a really great deal on some Easton Full Metal Jacket arrows (like free). I need to get the HIT inserts out of them. The guy who gave me the arrows said he installed the inserts with blue Gorilla glue.

I tried heating up a field point with a propane torch and that did not work. I heated the field point enough that I'm pretty sure I screwed up that shaft, and the insert never budged!

Anybody here have any advice as to how to get these inserts out of these shafts without damaging the shaft?

Take out the nock, put a 5" long brass rod in the 1/8" diam and close with your thumb the nock end then whip the shaft toward the ground until your insert get out. The brass rod will act as a hammer (lead extractor) and push the insertout.
Do it out side as after a few whips the insert and the rod can be thrown away and brake something. Usually it takes 30 to 45 seconds per shaft to remove insert and you don't destroy the carbon

Heat them up, but then let them cool down. It is the cooling cycle that breaks the bond.

It may take two or three heat/cool cycles (i have only ever used a bic lighter, not a torch).

There is a point of "too hot", and it will break down the bonding agent in the carbon.

Put on an old dull broadhead, and use a bench vice that is partially open to draw the arrow down backwards (in a slide hammer action)rapidly against the backside of the head (gloves are good idea).

I have used this on GT Trads, AD Trads, Carbon Tech Safari's, and AB Grizzsticks with no problems over the years. I will go out on a limb and say the Easton FMJ's should be the same.

What I have done on a few Axis to remove their inserts was to slowly just drill them out.Get a drill bit that just fits inside the shaft and hold the shaft with one of those v-groove arrow removal grabbers.It will give you a better grip on the arrow and just slowly drill it out,aluminum inserts are fairly soft and drill easily.Just take your time and go slowly.

I've never tried this with full metal jackets but I have taken out the knock and got a drill bits that will fit inside. Raise the tip end up and sling it down hard many take a couple of hits.

Hey bro,  don't you have a ram rod for your black powder rifle?  That works slick for punching those inserts out. a brass rifle cleaning rod works well too.

any type of steel rod that will fit inside the shaft should work fine. That GG blue top glue is tough stuff.  good luck.

Slinging a drill bit downward never worked for me on the Axis shafts.
Best way (only way) I've found is the same as JRY309....drill them out. I use one size smaller bit than the circumference of the inside of the shaft. This prevents the actual shaft from being accidentally drilled, and once you work your way along the length of the insert, the glue bond will usually break and the insert comes out of the shaft on your drill bit.

Thanks for the help and suggestions guys. I used the info y'all gave me and improvised with what I had on hand. I ended up using a Gold Tip weight wrench. I just pile drove the wrench into the back of the insert and was able to break them loose and push them out. I knew I could get the info I needed from the TradGang braintrust!

And I can't understand why anybody would use anything other than Big Jims hot melt on inserts! They stay in and sure come out easy when you need them out with that stuff!

Bisch, I hear ya on the BigJim glue.  Thats all I use for inserts.
