Zwickey broadhead came off ferrule
« on: August 02, 2015, 01:03:00 PM »
I was just shooting my zwickey two blades into a rhinehart block, and i was pulling an arrow out and the broadhead came off the ferrule, leaving the head in the target. Im not bashing zwickey but has anyone else had this happen?

They probably stick them on with hot melt like anyone else could do. Getting it out of the target can be a challenge, I use a long hook pulling pliers and even that is quite a test for hand strength to get the broadhead out.

As in, the broadhead came apart ? or just came off of an inserted screw in ferrule ?

It was a screw in broadhead, the blade came off the ferrule in the target. I tried using pliers to get the blade out of the target, its a lost cause  :)

Travis the furrel is not the adapter..... are you saying the broad head came apart like Chuck said or did the broad head come off of the adapter?... that could be a glue failure.

sounds like glue failure for the adapter...that is not the broadhead failing if I am reading this right.

I have had moderate success pushing an arrow back into the hole and pushing the BH all the way through the target.  You have to hit the ferrule pretty straight, but it can be done.

Did you clean the ferrule out with degreaser to remove any oil thats in there and did you clean the adapter? If their is oil present the hot melt glue will not hold.

If you feel the broadhead out of a say 3-D deer it will feel warm to the touch and if you leave them in for any time it will loosen the hot melt and when you pull them out all the have in the insert. I would say it would be almost impossble for a Ziwickey to come apart in a 3-D target. In AZ they are hot to the touch when you pull them out.

Zwickey sells a "screw in". Basically a normal head where they glue the adapter in at factory.  I had this same thing happen a few times.  Now i just buy them and glue my own adapters in.  Has not happened again.

Pushing the head through is a good suggestion.

I don't know for sure what Zwickey uses to bond their screw in heads but it is unlikely that it is hot melt.

I've only had problems taking the adapter out!, if you have the broadhead out of your target just glue it back on with hotmelt.

I've done the push through method. Works only if you know which hole to bush into. When it happened to me I immediately marked the hole and pushed through. It worked. Another time it didn't. And I ended up shooting the tagged man y many times with the broadhead still in there. It came out eventually looking like Swiss cheese

Travis all the Zwickys are glue ons either they glue them on  or you do.....to an adapter ......I prefer to do my own i degreese the inside of the furrel head with acetone and then I use epoxy most of the time......no issues.

Unfortunately, I too have experienced this. Most likely it is glue failure. It is difficult to remove without damaging your target. I would leave it be.

I have had this happen too, and with other brands as well, until I learned to always glue my own like others have suggested.

Totally solved the problem by switching to wood.

I never depend on anyone to glue my broadheads on the adaptors or the shaft. At the factory they just stick the heads on and most are not on the adaptors straight they need to be spun and twisted till the wobble comes out of the shaft. You cant get accurate arrow flight with a head mounted crooked.

That's a poor glue job...Best if you do it yourself. A little degreaser inside the taper and then for good measure the rough them up with a little 150 grip sandpaper. Clean out the taper again and use some good hot melt. I like the one Big Jim sells. You are done losing broadheads after that
