tusker super spirit broadheads
« on: August 06, 2015, 09:46:00 AM »
Thinking about trying some of these this year. Has any one used them and what are your thoughts? I will be shooting these from a 39# long bow drawing 25.5 inches. Arrow is 27" to bop shooting 125 up front. Do you think single bevel or double bevel would be the best?

They're pretty new, doubt many have tried em.
I'm pretty sure they'd work fine though.
Nothing fancy about Tuskers...but nothing really wrong either.
I've used some of the bigger ones and they were fine.

Keep in mind the spirits are made for 5/16" shafts.

As far as bevel...just use what ever you can get sharpest.

Nothing wrong with that.

I'd like to suggest Braveheart Archery as a supplier.

Tim is one of the good guys.

stack,

I will be shooting some tusker concords I won from the st judes auction this year. They fly great out of my set up. I have never had to work on sharpening a broadhead as long as I did these. Finally got them to how sharp I want a broadhead but I felt like I wore my file and sharpening stones down to nothing.

Nutech, good to know, thanks for the info. I am not real good when it comes to getting them scary sharp. Might have to rethink my choices.

I really like the Tusker heads...I had some Concordes that were very easy to get super sharp.
They are very robust and well made.

The only thing I didn't like about them so much, was that I felt the ferrule could have been more round. As they were, the ferrules were a bit elliptical.  You can still mount them true, of course, easier on a wood shaft than a steel BH adapter though.

This is nit picky of me but there are several other similar BH brands that have very true ferrules that I prefer.

As aside, I would opt for the single bevels.

Kris,
Mine were like yours on the ferrule, kind of elliptical. I got them mounted on my inserts for using with my carbon arrows but they were a bit tricky getting them perfectly centered.

Nuctech -

Thanks for your recognition of this as well. IMO this could be addressed through their manufacturing process.

Still- very awesome heads and I would use any day of the week.

RADA wheelie sharpener works great on the Tusker double bevels. Darn tough heads

I have the concords.

I only shot a javelina with them last year.
They worked pretty good. Thats really the only time I've used them.

They are tough to sharpen.

Tim at Braveheart had some KME-ground 25* single bevel years ago, then the mfg started to grind them and I've heard it's barely an edge, a bevel, but barely and edge...

In the "old" days, they came thru as "blanks" with a truly rounded edge!!!

That is one reason I'd go with Bill Dunn's Grizzly as Ron at KME set up a grinder for Bill and they need a bit of touch up, but come out of the pack with a good bevel anyway...

When I shot double bevel, STOS were fairly hard steel, in the same realm as Tusker and Grizzly.

Get em sharp, they stay sharp.

Doc you are right not that many years ago Tuskers came with no edge at all.

Bevels on the heads are better now than they have ever been but they still take some work and I never recommend Tuskers for those who have problems with sharpening.

Now if you are handy with a file, Tuskers are "da bomb".

Thanks, Tim...

KME said they're almost (almost) as hard as Grizzly...and the ones I got KME beveled from you have served me well for several years!

I can't shoot long shots on the pool table and can't get a consistent angle with a file...

KME's newer Diamond Stones on the BH and Knife sharpeners do help raise a burr, but it's still work from what I hear!

I can't sharpen a two blade worth a darn but a rada wheelie and a tusker Aztec or Delta and the hair will peel off you arm. I really ought to sell those sharpeners.  Stupid simple and very effective, and a whopping 6.25 last time I checked the big auction site.
