need good measurements for osage selfbow.
« on: October 11, 2007, 11:20:00 PM »
I have billets which will equal 62" once spliced. I have made other bows but this is my first osage. I need to know how wide to go and when to taper ect. I would also like to add reflex. Thanks    Jesse

What design are you going for. Osage is real forgiving. I have several in deveral different designs. It all depends on what the stave looks like etc. I have a really clean strait grained flatbow that is 62". Then I have several narrower bows that are 62". All shoot great.

So figure out what you want and go for it. I like the flat bows and character bows. My next will have flipped tips Like my flatbow cause it looks good.

Ok so do you think I could get away with 1 1/4 at fades tapering straight to 3/8 tips? I like the thin design. Thanks for the advice to get a book but I am   going to make this one with just the help I can get for free.  Thanks   Jesse

let the wood tell ya what it wants to be. Some pristine, straight staves say they like to be 1-1/4', others feel more comfortable wider. All depends on the wood, finished (NTN) length and weight.

Here's a great read from the past about wood bow design from the archives
