Going Back to the Dark Side
«
on:
October 12, 2007, 12:41:00 PM »
Well after taking my spring bear with my Osage selfbow and Woody's knapped head, I'm ready to start to deer season hunting with glass bows and carbon arrows. Since I'm making this confession, I might as well spill my guts and come clean. My last hour arrow which is all white so I can see the shaft better is now tipped with a Lumin-nock
At the White Mountain Traditional Shoot this past August, I shot the night coon shoot with a fellow tradganger. When his first arrow went out in the dark, I almost hit the ground thinking tracers were in coming! That was the first time I had seen Lumin-nocks in action. I decided to give them a try with my last hour arrow to be able to really pick up the hit or missss  I'll still have a traditional hand forge broad head on the cutting surface though...Doc

Going a bit 'Star Wars' aren't you Doc? :D
You should be able to re-find that one, for sure!

you don't need the white shaft with a lumi, Doc. Still waiting for someone with more ambition than me to invent one for woodies......

bbassi,
Actually the white shaft is so I can see it for those last 15 minutes of shooting when my black shafts seem to disappear.
The Lumin-nock is to be able to really pick up the arrow in flight at dusk. I've shot some deer at the last few minutes and not been able to tell exactly where I hit them. It should be fun anyway to be able to find my arrow :D Doc

Nice looking point Jeff. Next you will be mounting one of Woody's stone points on a carbon.

Ted, I wouldn't ever do that to Woody. He's got one of my knives and I don't want to see how it would skin me

Doc,
Nothing is more fun in the summer than the last half dozen targets on the 3d course at dusk with the lighted nock, except for maybe a few 60 yarders
CAUTION: Lighted nocks at dusk are "homing devices" for other archers arrows
Note: I would like to start the bidding for a Tippit broadhead at $50
You can make your own lighted nocks for a fraction of the cost...let me know if you need a tutorial, I have a few saved.

Steve O,
OH YEA...makin' your own brings me back from the Dark Side. I'd love to see your tutorial.
Funny you should say that about that lighted nocks as "homing devices"...cause after I picked myself up off the ground, I hit his nock in the dark and turned it off. That was a pretty neat sequence of shots on the first target

I will post some links here later when I can get on my computer if that is leagal? Otherwise I will p.m. I think there may be one in the archives here...I'll check.
It is very easy though. For a basic one you turn on and off yourself (this is what I do) just take out your nock, drill a small hole from the inside to the throat (this is where you will see the light if you use a black or non transparent nock), then drill again from the large opening towards the throat about 1/4 to 3/8" in with a drill bit just a hare in diameter larger than that your lighted bobber light. I get the Thill brand at WalMart when they are 50% off and they are about $2 each. Sure beats a $10 Lumenock.

Nothing wrong with being able to see your arrows and there flight, when the light is not at it's best.

I think you ought to paint those shafts with radium so they'd glow like the old watch hands. And, too, you could track your bears at night with a geiger counter! This just gets better and better!
