Topic: bear kodiak hunter and vintage accessories

would like to know all I can about this bow and accessories. year, values, history, etc.

Bear Kodiak hunter Amo 60' #45, sn KT 19717, patent 1953 in Canada.

bow is in like new condition, I think one little bruise (1/4 inch) and a little scratch on handle only into clear coat 1/4 inch long.

That bow was made somewhere around 1970-72 depending on if it has a stabilizer bushing or not. The serial number is actually KT19717. It is a great bow and I think the best looking Kodiak Hunter,  especially if there is no stabilizer bushing.

Someone has one near identical listed in the classifieds.

I do not see a  stabilizer bushing, so I believe its a 70-71.

I think the Value would be somewhere between 180-300 but the market is constantly swinging.

I had a Kodiak Hunter that was a  great shooting bow. I traded it to a friend because he loved it and I am not a  fan of the higher wrist grips.  I prefer the Grizzly.

My Buddies little brother was shooting a mid 70's model and could shoot it lights out. I mean, if he missed the X ring, it was a bad shot!

Thanks guys, it does not have a stabilizer bushing and I just made an copying down error on the SN.  

do you guys have a idea on woods or what the glass color is called. or any of the accessories.

I'd say 70-71 as well. Looks like the original string. I would get rid of that. Bears quiver at that time would have been a double spring arm 4 or 8 arrow model. Very nice looking bow.

As a teen I used one of the green ones with the green glass - that one has the grey glass. I hadn't had one in my hands since back then until recently and I too did not care for the high grip; like the grip on the Grizzly much better.

I'd agree its a 1970, maybe early 71. Shedua, bubinga and maple laminations in the riser, Arctic Gray glass.Smooth-shooting bow designed by Owen Jeffery when he was at Bear to compliment the Kodiak Magnum and create a hunting  bow in a  price point below the newly-created Super Kodiak in the mid-1967 catalog. The Super Kodiak and the Kodiak Hunter replaced the Kodiak. That one appears to be in  very good shape but values are hard to predict. The market is down right now, and , for whatever reasons, folks tend to put more value on the 67-69 KH's  with one-piece solid handles  or the 72-76 KH Grayling Greenies. Right now FMV is probably $175 - 200. They made and sold more 45# than any other weight, so there are a lot of those around and they typically go for a little less than bows in the 50,55# range. As mentioned, the Bear double spring arm bow quiver was all the rage , then. After they made the stabilizer bushing standard in 1971, they started selling  a single (upper) spring arm and a screw-in adapter plate.

I'd take off that quiver. All that weight on the lower limb can't be good for shooting.

What string can you use on these (dacron only?).  I'm guessing only a B-50 type string, but don't know enough about older bow to know for sure.

how about B-97 or B-55?

What length do you guys figure, The bow is marked AMO 60" so should take a 56", but the one on the bow now, which appears to be the original is 54".

Nice looking bow. Try bearbowman at First Class Flemish strings, he is a sponsor and makes nice B-50 strings for Bear Bows. Lots of pic on his web site.

Nice find. That quiver was sold by Wiffen Archery in Milwaukee, WI.  The Wiffens were very active in the archery community years ago.

You can use a B-50 or B-55 with that bow. Brace around 8-8 1/4". Measured from center of the grip to string. Have fun !

54" is too short.

56" should be the ticket.
