It is a gimmick, and a nice one.  You can bend it up out of the way on the side that needs it, or keep it low over the eyes.

I was not pleased with baseball style hats. My ears tend to sunburn to the pint of blistering. So I went with the "boonie" style but did a mod to the brim. I removed the binding, cut the brim to 2inches and sewed the binding back on.
In cold weather (rare out here) I use a stocking cap.

The Filson crusher in either the standard or oil finish is a short brimmed hat that is long wearing and easy to get along with.  For a little extra  warmth the wool crusher that Big Jim sells is a good one as well.

For cold weather the best by far is Two Tracks Coup Cap.  If it's not too warm they have fleece models as well.  But for really warm weather I like a light weight bucket style hat.

I make my own.  Take a regular camo ball cap I like, rip the stitching out around the bill with a seam ripper, peel back the fabric, cut the bill back as short as you like,  fold fabric tightly back over short brim securing with fabric glue and clips. Once dry remove clips, trim excess fabric tight to glue line and - voila'

Would love to try the 2tracks coups cap, the fleece one but they have been out of stock on the website a long time, rarely gets cold enough here for the wool.

Have several of the short bill trad gang cotton hats and like them in the warmer weather.

I have one and really like it. I was also looking at his website to see when he would be making some more. I wanted one in a different color.

I've come to prefer either a boonie style hat or crushable wool full brim.  I like a full brim to keep the sun off my ears/neck and shed light rains better than a cap style hat.

You are not going to do any better than the Coup Cap for cold weather wear...they seem expensive until you wear one for a bit...then they seem well worth the money

I can't believe a whole thread about short brim winter hats and someone didn't mention Stormy Kromer. I don't have one but other seem to love them.
