Ok needing some advise/help
« on: September 26, 2015, 08:54:00 PM »
Ok need help with a few things in my efforts to become a better archer. I bought a used take down Proghorn and am shooting a set of matched wooden arrows made by wilderness arrows. I have been shooting the string that came with it, but it is becoming tattered looking and the archery shop didn't knock it correctly I believe. So I plan to contact Oliver Stacy for a new string. So...

1) I am sure that Oliver can help me with what type of string, but is there a better kind for this particular bow that other proghorn shooters have found.

2) How do I find the correct knocking point placement?

3) Brace height - I've been doing a lot of research on brace height, but are there any videos that anyone can recommend on YouTube or something that is legit? I've found very conflicting information and am not sure which one is correct.

4) I've started trying the three fingers under method and really really like the feel better and would like to begin shooting like this; however, every time I shoot this way the string slaps my arm. When I shoot split finger it never strikes my arm. Any idea on reasons for this... does it have to do with the brace height?

Basically I want to take it to the next level and begin tuning my bow, learn to set the correct brace height, and getting the right string.

Any and all help much appreciated! Thanks and god bless and good luck to all this season!

1) Need more info, what is the draw weight @ 28” I had an SBD 8 strand on mine, it was 48#@28".

2) Start at ¾” and work your way down until you find that sweet spot. I like .625 or 5/8"

3) I had mine set at 7.125 or 7 1/8”

4) Go to the shooting forum, Arne Moe will get you straightened out.

If all else fails call Herb.

Good luck.

Ok awesome exactly what I was looking for! Thanks

I'm in Belton, Tx... About 45 min north of Austin

My bow reads 52# @ 27"... My draw is 29.5 so I'm guessing I'm pulling about 58# or so...

Thanks for the measurement help... I'll measure to see where it's at now and post it up when I get home on Monday. Thanks again

If I'm not mistaken, an 8 strand is good to 65#@28. I like a skinny string, others may not. You have a great bow, keep at it!

If all else fails, call Herb Medland.

It's my first bow other than an old bear recurve I had as a kid so I don't have much to compare it to, but I am pretty proud of her.

Wow thanks for the invite Sam. I fly over Jarrell all the time. As soon as work slows down a bit I'd love to come out and get some help. Thanks again!

Holy smokes, that rack is on point! I see you're in Belton and I can make out the corner of an ASU rucksack in your pic. You at Hood? I'm over in Benning. Looks like you have all the tools for success, I'd take Sam up on his offer as soon as you can. Having an expierienced shooter mentor you for a bit will save you countless hours, dollars, and headaches. Good luck!

Good to see folks start out with a quality piece like the Pronghorn. Any of our fine string making sponsors would be glad to help you.

Not sure I'd list Killeen, TX as my favorite home, but glad to see you getting a good start in the trad game. I did have a good time sliding my MG around every curve in the dirt roads there when the artillery range was closed. This was back in 1963, by the way   :)
