I went out this morning and saw gobs of turkeys, but none within range, and I couldn't get a stalk to work. So, I went back this afternoon and found some birds that were feeding along in some thick brushy country. After a bit of a stalk, I closed to about 20 yards and made one jump with my shot, but didn't touch a feather. They decided that it might be a good time to leave, but I followed, and picked them up again about 50 yards out. I made a hurried stalk to within about 20 yards, picked the last bird in line, and let fly….
She went down immediately, but recovered for a moment and went down a bank, where a second arrow finished the job.
She will be a perfect bird for the dinner table, and now I can concentrate on a gobbler. Nice to have opening day success.
JD's Morningstar and Howard Hill heads did the trick.
