Hey buddy , those smaller ones are harder to hit.
Good eating for sure. Nice work with the new widow.
Yeah....she's no whopper like some of our Shrewhaven does, or even some of these fat farm deer. I passed a much bigger doe earlier that sit, but she had twin fawns in tow. This one came in alone, didn't look to be a fawn (she's not, she's year and a 1/2), and she kept posing for that perfect shot. I had it in my head I wanted to kill a deer yesterday....perfect weather, lots of time to butcher today....so I did it.
I don't know if other folks think like this....but I was especially satisfied with the shot. The fletching blossomed exactly where I wanted it to, complete pass through with Kustom Kings Trailmaker head, and the blood trail was amazing. I followed it for the short 20 yards (even though I saw her fall) and it was pretty great.
Tracking lesson re-emphasized....pay attention! She was in that transitional tall weedy field stuff between a swamp and a picked bean field. I was in a pine tree at the edge of the swamp. Even though her blood loss was massive and quick, I could see how difficult it COULD have been through those tall weeds. The dry, woody weeds seemed to soak up the blood quickly. Also, even though I knew EXACTLY where she fell, when I got down there, it took me a minute or so before I could see her. I actually backed myself up 10 feet and realigned myself with the blood trail.
Tall overgrown fields continue to be my least favorite tracking terrain.
